Russia is claiming victory in Mariupol, Ukraine. If this is what victory looks like, what are they gaining?
Questions of the Day: How does the Florida legislature vote to take away the special tax status of Disney World benefit the citizens of Florida? If it is a benefit to the citizens of Florida, why allow The Villages and the Daytona International Speedway to keep their special tax status? What about the other 100 areas that have special tax status in Florida, should they be taken away also? I am interested in hearing readers’ opinion on how taking away Disney Worlds tax status is a benefit to the citizens of Florida.
A second Question of the Day: If you were attending the Tiger game tomorrow and had to choose between Miggy getting his 3,000th hit tomorrow and the Tigers losing, or the Tigers winning and Miggy coming up empty which would you chose?
Last night I got a little nervous after giving Miggy the Onion of the Day for his baserunning error in the second inning in last night’s game. When Miggy got two more hits to get to 2,999 with at least one more at bat coming in the game, I thought how stupid it would look if I gave Miggy an “onion” on the day he gets 3,000 hits. Although I was rooting for him to get another hit, I was relieved when he didn’t get the hit and I didn’t look like a total buffoon.
Here is a record that we are not likely to see happen again, unless repeated by Shohei Ohtani. Two-way star Shohei Ohtani of the Angels and the reigning AL MVP made history before taking the mound last night. He batted twice in a six-run first inning as the Angels sent 10 to the plate, becoming the first starting pitcher since at least 1900 to bat twice in the first before throwing a pitch, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Yesterday I learned what real healthcare looks and feels like. Within 4 hours after receiving my positive covid test result from CVS yesterday morning, I received a phone call from the Washtenaw County Health Department asking how I was feeling and making sure I had all the information I needed as to the dos and don’ts when one tests positive for Covid-19. I said yes and told her the information I received from CVS was very helpful. She reminded me to contact my primary care physician (as did CVS). I sent an email to my primary care physician, Dr. Tom O’Connor who has been my U of M physician for over 30 years. He responded with a phone call within 20 minutes. After a thorough conversation he put a prescription for Paxlovid into the portal for me to pick up at Meijer. He also told me to get a pulse oximeter. I called Meijer immediately after hanging up with Dr.T. I talked to the pharmacist, and she verified they had the prescription and would have it ready for me to pick up at the drive thru. I told the pharmacist I needed a pulse-ox but was reluctant to go into the store because of my positive test. She said no problem. She went and got one off the shelf and said she would have it with my prescription. Ten minutes later I pulled up to the drive thru and was expecting it to take some time because I had never used Meijer as my pharmacy before. I gave the pharmacist all my insurance information and credit card. Everything was processed in less than five minutes, and I was on my way home. In less than two hours after emailing Dr. T, I had everything I needed, including the information on what of my regular medications I should discontinue while I was taking the paxlovid for the next five days. I know it will not always be like this, but it sure was appreciated yesterday. And yes, the paxlovid seems to be working its magic.
Pray for peace and tolerance. What are you doing to stop the violence? Get vaccinated and get your booster.
Quote of the Day: “People who are different are not the reason that our roads are in bad shape… or that healthcare costs are too high, or that teachers are leaving the profession. We cannot let hateful people tell you otherwise to scapegoat and deflect from the fact that they are not doing anything to fix the real issues that impact people’s lives. We will not let hate win.” Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow.
Orchid of the Day: Dr.Tom O’Connor-see above story.
Onion of the Day and Video of the Day go hand and hand: Another youth baseball game in which sportsmanship was thrown out the window. This time it was player vs. player. I hope there are assault charges filed on this one.
Dr O’Connor was awesome for ralph after his heart attack. Truly a caring physician and man.

He is amazing.
Desantas and the Republicans are fiercely perpetrating culture wars: banning books, don’t say gay, critical race theory, and the latest, labelling people pedophiles without any proof. Everyone who is sane knows this. They have allowed the elimination of predominantly Democratic districts where people of color live just in time to take effect before the upcoming elections. Court fights over this will be too late.
This is clearly an attempt to silence any disagreement with ANYTHING the Florida legislature does no matter how egregious: prejudicial, or xenophobic it is. Hatred is the point. Cruelty is the point. Making people feel more marginalized is the point. A return to Jim Crow is the point. There is an aggressive full frontal effort to restore this country to the past where the permanent underclass has no rights to determine their future through denying the right to vote or limiting access to easily voting.

Disney will survive. Whatever path they take, it is my hope that their employees will be protected.
That was a terrific story of how health care can and should work. Be well.

You are so correct. They are doing everything in their power to trivialize people of color. It is sad and disgudting.
