In all my years of umpiring and in watching baseball, I have never seen a collision like occurred in last nights Tiger game in the 8th inning between Akil Baddoo and Derek Hill. The Baltimore player hit a long fly ball to left center exactly between left fielder Baddoo and centerfielder Hill. Both players took off on full sprint with ball, and both players arriving at the same spot at the same time. Neither player saw the other player and both were in a full sprint and were fully extended when they collided. Some how Hill caught the ball and was able to get on his knees and throw the ball to the infielder. To put it in perspective how hard Baddoo and Hill were running, Statcast had Baddoo running at 28.5 feet per second and Hill was running at 28.3 feet per second. The world record holder in the 100-yard dash averages 33 feet per second. Both players walked off the field with assistance as they were in pain and dazed. Today both players were put on the 10-day disabled list. Baddoo is under concussion protocols and Hill has some seriously bruised ribs. Here is a video of the collision.
Since the “carrot” is not working countries, communities, and businesses are implementing more “stick” approaches to incentivize people to get the covid-19 vaccine. Germany is considering no longer providing free covid-19 tests to people who are not vaccinated. Health insurance companies are considering charging higher premiums to employers with unvaccinated employees. The insurers are also considering charging higher premiums to individuals who purchase their own insurance and are not vaccinated. We are going to see more and more of this “stick” approach in the near future.
The Cadillac Blackwing will be the last gas-powered sedan Cadillac will produce. Per the Detroit News, a pair of Cadillac performance cars have begun arriving at dealers, and the CT4-V Blackwing and CT-5 Blackwing aren’t just powerful, track-ready racers. They’re the last new gas-powered sedans from General Motors’ flagship luxury brand, which is going electric by decade’s end.The CT5-V, GM says, “is the most powerful and fastest Cadillac production model in history,” with a top track speed of more than 200 mph. And the CT4-V Blackwing “is the most powerful and fastest-ever Cadillac subcompact,” according to the Detroit automaker. At least they didn’t say it was going to be the last gas-powered automobile they were going to produce.
In follow-up to my post of yesterday. The stock markets set all-time highs today as inflation game in lower than expected. I have no idea why I should be concerned about a deficit that is growing exponentially in the last decade.
Stay safe. Social distance. Wear your mask. Wash your hands regularly. Get your vaccine.
Orchid of the Day: Detroit Tiger Derek Hill. How he hung onto the ball and had the wherewithal to throw the ball to the infielder is beyond my comprehension. See above story.
Onion of the Day: President Biden for referring to Governor Gretchen Whitmer as Jennifer when he invited Whitmer to attend the signing of the Infrastructure Bill and thanked her for the work she continues to do. Like so many 70 year-old people, including myself, President Biden continues to have slips of the tongue. We are going to have to get used to them.
Quote of the Day: “Nasty collision. It was a ball hit in probably the perfect spot for both guys to be going full speed and both with a chance to catch it. You don’t see those a lot at this level, but when you see them, they are nasty,” Tiger manager A.J.Hinch in the post-game comments following the Baddoo/Hill collision.
