Thoughts for the Day, December 1, 2021: What is this world coming to?

The above is the image of a Sig Sauer 9 MM semi-auto handgun similar to the one used in Oxford High School shooting.  It is a highly efficient weapon, and it is used by many law enforcement officers throughout the world.  As we learned yesterday, when in the hands of an untrained person it can quickly be turned into a killing machine.

What is this world coming to?
It is a question I have been asked twice today.  Unfortunately, I have no answer.  I want to reassure people that things are going to be OK, but sometimes I am not sure.  I am not sure we will get back to the “good old days”, however defined.
Covid-19 is not going anywhere soon.  Civility is being replaced by anger.  Compromise is considered a weakness.  Acceptance of people with differing opinions is unacceptable to the left and right extremist.  Disagreeing is being replaced by being disagreeable. Politicians cannot be believed, which is nothing new, but they have taken it to a new extreme.  Just today, I read about politicians who are taking credit for the money their district is getting from the “Infrastructure Bill”, even though they didn’t vote for it. It is like they think we are stupid. We have an AG who is charging people with serious crimes in the Flint water crisis but refuses to allow the defendants access to the information which they are legally required to provide the defense. It is disheartening and discouraging.  I can go on and on, but I won’t.
Obviously, I have more years behind me than I do in front of me, so I could throw in the towel and just focus on myself and my immediate family and not care about what is going on around me.  That would be the easy thing to do, but I won’t.  My competitive juices will not allow me to quit fighting the fight. There is too much at stake. I am going to continue to do what I do to make this a better place.  Civility, kindness, acceptance, and caring will be my highest priorities.
I am still struggling with yesterday’s shooting at Oxford High School.  We now know that the gun came from home and was purchased only a week ago.  Who knows why the parents didn’t have the newly purchased automatic pistol secure?  The carnage and the loss of life is gut wrenching for me. I cannot imagine how the families are dealing with this tragedy. As I said yesterday, when are we going to say enough is enough This leads me into my quote of the day, which comes from Nolan Finley the very conservative Detroit News columnist and editorial writer.
I am calling it a night.  MSU is playing Louisville at 7:15 and Michigan is playing North Carolina at 9:15 and I have been up since 5:00 AM.
Stay Safe. Social Distance. Wear your mask when indoors in public places.  Schedule your vaccine and booster.
Quote of the Day: “But we damn well better start praying in this country for the will and the wisdom to come together and put an end to this slaughter of innocents.” Nolan Finley, Detroit News columnist, following yesterday’s killing of three students and wounding seven others at Oxford High School
Orchid of the Day:  To the first responders and staff at Oxford High School.  Their action saved lives.
Onion of the Day: Ghislaine Maxwell, Jeffrey Epstein’s associate.  Reading some of the testimony during the first day of her trial, makes my stomach turn.

Tom, I urge you to continue your positive outlooks in life. You inspire many. Those who argue from the far left or far right are few by comparison to the conservative sides. Evil has many faces and Oxford High definitely experienced the trauma in those lost lives, injured and those who hurts you don’t see. But the race is not over and we will not fail to continue the good fight! Thank you for standing up!
