Thoughts for the Day, December 23, 2020: Christmas Eve Eve

Christmas Eve is always a big day for our family. Early on in my life we always got together with my parents and my brothers and sister. As our families grew and after my parents passed away, we always got together at my older brother Larry’s house with our kids and grandkids. Recently, Leah and I started our own Christmas Eve tradition, where we went to Christmas Eve mass with Katy and her family and then everyone, including Chris and his family would come back to our house for a huge Christmas Eve dinner, where Leah would give everyone a new pair of pajama’s that they were to wear back at our house Christmas morning.

On Christmas morning after the grandkids opened gifts at their own houses, they would show up at our house for a big breakfast that I cooked and then we would open gifts in the living room, which quickly became a disaster area filled with wrapping paper, laughs, joy and happiness. When it was all over everyone went back to their respective homes and Leah and I would go to Katy’s house for a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings. By the end of the day, Leah and I would get home and crash from all the excitement and joy.

This year we are going to do as well as we can under the circumstance. On Christmas Eve, there will be no church service but Leah and I will deliver dinner to everyone along with their pajamas. On Christmas morning Katy’s and Chris’s families will come to our house for breakfast and gift exhange, but it will be in shifts by family. Katy’s family first and then Chris’s family. On Christmas afternoon, it will be a zoom Christmas with my brothers and sister, Katy will then deliver Christmas dinner to Leah and me. After that, I plan on enjoying a little quiet time with Leah and maybe catch a little of the Michigan vs Nebraska basketball game.

Once again, 2020 will be different from all other years. Even though I am disappointed that we will not have the Christmas we normally have, I must remember to thank God that we all still have our health and we are still intact as a family, which is more than the families of the 315,000 covid-19 victims can say.

Merry Christmas. Stay safe, wear your mask, social distance and wash your hands regularly.

Quote of the Day: ” For Christmas is tradition time—Traditions that recall the precious memories down the years, The sameness of them all.” Helen Lowrie Marshall
