Thoughts for the Day, December 29, 2020: Why no line item veto for the POTUS?

Today I took a ride into Charlevoix to stop at the Cherry Republic store to bye my favorite salsa, mild Cherry Salsa. I bought three 16 ounce jars. It probably will not last through the weekend. You can go online and order it. It will be delivered in a week. I ordered a case this summer for myself and I ordered 6 jars delivered to a friend.

The MSU men’s basketball team took it on the chin again last night. They started the season 6-0 and were ranked number 4 in the country after handily beating Duke in early December. However, they have lost three straight in the B1G after getting hammered by the Golden Gophers last night. The B1G has nine teams ranked in the top 25. If you don’t bring your A game to the gym, you are probably going to lose this year. Don’t be surprised in the B1G champion has at least 5 loses this year.

The Detroit Pistons are off to an 0-3 start after blowing double digit leads in the fourth quarter of their first two games. The Pistons, like the Red Wings and Tigers are going through major team rebuilding. And then there are the Lions who have been rebuilding since 1957. Professional sports in Detroit are in a sorry state and it appears it will be that way for a while. Don’t be surprised if the fans stay away even after they are allowed back in the stadiums.

Today Governor Whitmer signed the Michigan Covid-19 relief bill after slashing $220 million with her line item veto power. She approved spending of $340 million after she used another line item veto to reverse a Republican intiative that was to cut $100 million from the Medicaid budget. I have always liked the power of a line item veto that the governor has. It is not available to the President of the United States. The Supreme Court ruled in 1998 the President could only approve or veto legislation in its entirety. In my humble opinion, the line item veto is a useful tool.

Now that the hustle and bustle of the Christmas holiday is behind me, I am finding dealing with the isolation caused by Covid-19 is hard. I am finding myself having to be very creative to not get bored during the day, especially now that golfing and bike riding are not an option here in Michigan. I would like to spend more time socializing when I am at the gym, but the risk is too great. I am sure I will figure it out, but it is challenging.
