Thoughts for the Day, December 4, 2020: Do you remember the scare tactics?

Do you remember when Dr. Fauci was accused of scaring the country back in April when he predicted over 140,000 deaths with hospitals being overwhelmed? Do you remember when after pressure from the White House he lowered his projections to 80,000 deaths a week or two later? Do you remember when many people complained that the public health officials were inflating the numbers of deaths and hospitalizations because the skeptics believed it was the patients underlying health issues that were the real cause of the death and hospitalization and not Covid-19? How is that working out for us?

Lets take yesterday’s numbers alone of 2,858 deaths and 100,667 hospitalizations. Now lets cut them in half to satisfy the sceptics who think the numbers are inflated. This would still be 1,429 deaths which is higher than any 7 day average between May 14 and November 20, The 50,333 hospitalizations would be higher than any day between August 20 and November 5. Even by cutting the numbers in half to satisy the skeptics, it would only take three days to surpass the number of people died on 9/11 or 16 days to surpass the number of people who died by the flu in 2019. I don’t know about everyone else, but to me today’s numbers cut in half are still scary.

The Giuliani circus came to Michigan on Wednesday evening. He was allowed to take over a legislative committee. He was given free rein to question witnesses and then he went on to lecture the legislature on how it was their duty to act. How he was able to get away with this is beyond me.

The Detroit News reported that U of M President Mark Schlissel announced the hiring of Guidepost Solutions to collaborate with the university in implementing recommendations made in July by the WilmerHale law firm after it investigated sexual misconduct allegations against Philbert. “This is one important step in our ongoing comprehensive work to prevent and address sexual misconduct and create an environment and culture where everyone in our community feels they can report misconduct without fear of retaliation,” said Schlissel. “The firm will help us ensure that we will implement the recommendations as quickly and effectively as possible while leveraging the considerable work that UM has done at this point.” This is a major step as the univerity grapples with addressing this issue that just caused a $9.25 million settlement with the 8 victims of the recently dismissed provost. U of M is also facing a very large settlement as a result of Dr. Andersosn’s alleged sexual misconduct.

Earlier today, I posted a story about Matt and Kelly Stafford being nominated by the Detroit News with 10 others for Michiganian of the Year. If you haven’t read the story here is a link to the story https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/michigan/michiganians-of-year/2020/12/03/detroit-lions-matthew-and-kelly-stafford-helping-people-off-field-michiganians-of-the-year/3762
