Thoughts for the Day, February 8, 2023: Who gained political clout after the State of the Union speech?

I did not watch the State of the Union speech last night.  Instead I watched the MSU/Maryland basketball, which was a clunker at best. I have never been a big fan of the State of the Union speech, especially if it is in the president’s first term as I view it as a glorified campaign speech. I usually get the highlights/lowlight of the speech the next day from various media reports and YouTube clips. It is always interesting reading media reports. Many times, they are 180 degrees different in their summation and comments about the speech. It makes me wonder if they watched the same speech.

Here is what inflation looks like.

In 1987 the current University of Michigan Hospital and Taubman Ambulatory Care Building were completed for $300 million. Today Henry Ford Health said Wednesday it’s pursuing a $2.5 billion development plan over the next decade with the Detroit Pistons and Michigan State University that would create a new hospital, a medical research facility as well as residential and recreational developments.

The Detroit-based health system plans to tear down the Health Alliance Plan headquarters and construct a $1.8 billion hospital in Detroit’s New Center area across the street from the existing Henry Ford Hospital, officials announced at the Pistons Performance Facility. The hospitals and facilities would be connected through a series of bridges, underground tunnels and walkway green space. The new hospital would have 877 beds, the same number as the existing hospital, but a new patient tower would house 350 of those, officials said.

My Dell computers have always come with Microsoft Bing as the search engine.  I have never been a big fan of Bing, thus I always downloaded Google and used it nearly 100% of the time.  That may change with the recent announcement that Microsoft has paired Bing with the artificial intelligence software from OpenAI, the maker of the popular chatbot ChatGPT. I look forward to testing this new version of Bing out over the next few months.

In my weekly round of golf yesterday in Gulf Shores, I was paired with three guys my age and with my ability.  Jake (Alabama), Tom (Minnesota) and Pat (Grand Rapids) all worked together in the hardware industry and get together every year in Alabama at Jake’s place with their wives for a annual reunion.  The guys welcomed me into their group and even started including me in their trash talking. By the end of the round of golf, I offered to buy a round of beer in the clubhouse. They gladly accepted.

In the clubhouse the stories really started flowing.  Jake played college ball at Alabama and Pat spends a lot of time in Harbor Springs during the summer, so we exchanged phone numbers.  Pat and I are planning on playing golf together at The Highlands this summer, and hopefully again next year in Gulf Shores.  Just another reason I love golf.

Quote of the Day: KareenAbdul-Jabbar in 2019 reacting to Lebron James approaching Kareem’s NBA career scoring record “I want [other players] to break my records because doing so is one more benchmark of human progress,”  Each time an athlete demonstrates that a person is capable of more than we thought, they have inspired all of humanity to realize that they are capable of reaching further than they thought possible.”

Orchid of the Day: Lebron James for setting the NBA career scoring record yesterday.

Onion of the Day:  The Memphis police officer who took a picture of Tyre Nichols while he was handcuffed and sent it to five other people.

Question of the Day: Now that Lebron is the all-time scoring champ, should he be considered the GOAT?
