Thoughts for the Day, Halloween 2023: She finally gives up.

I woke up this morning to see an inch of snow on the ground.  On my way to the gym, the snow was coming down so hard on US 31 next to Lake Michigan that I could barely see the road as my headlights’ beam was reflecting off the snow back into my vision.  I am glad that I ordered new tires for my SHO which I will be having installed on Monday.  I am still optimistic that I will be playing golf on Thursday when the temps will be in the mid-forties and sunny.  Welcome to our first winter in Petoskey.

Finally, after seven years and over $60 million and not one felony conviction, AG Nessel has finally admitted the case against Nick Lyon, Governor Snyder, and others is finally closed. This political prosecution was a civil case and had no business in a criminal court.  Nessel and her predecessor Schute should have known better.

Per the Detroit News, Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office is ending its pursuit of criminal prosecutions over the Flint water crisis after seven years of no convictions, a decision that came Tuesday after the Michigan Supreme Court rejected an attempt to revive charges against former Republican Gov. Rick Snyder. Nessel’s Flint prosecution team — led by Chief Deputy Attorney General Fadwa Hammoud and Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy — said the Flint water cases are now “closed.”

Las Vegas Raiders star Maxx Crosby is dominating the NFL and now has decided to give back to the place that helped develop him into the player and man he is today. Ahead of the Raiders game with the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football, Eastern Michigan announced Crosby and his wife Rachel, a former soccer athlete at the school, will be giving $1 million to the EMU athletic department.  Because of the gift, the football field inside Rynearson Stadium will be named after Crosby.

“First and foremost, Eastern Michigan University holds a very special place in my heart, and I am incredibly grateful for the significant role my EMU experience has played in shaping my life as an athlete and as a man.  Without the opportunity to attend EMU, I would not have met my wife, Rachel, who has given me the most beautiful gift imaginable in our daughter, Ella. Without EMU, I wouldn’t have the lifelong friends that now serve as advisors and business partners. Without EMU, I may not have ever had the opportunity to achieve my dream of playing in the National Football League. With an immense amount of humility and gratitude for the continued support of the administration, teachers, coaches, athletes, and students, I am committing to a $1 million gift to Eastern Michigan University Athletics.”  Crosby said in a released statement.

For EMU this is a big deal. Maxx gets my Orchid of the Day.

In last night’s victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, the Lions’ defense was suffocating.  Two stats tell the story.

The Lions hounded Raiders’ quarterback Garoppolo all night, pressuring him on 71.4% of his drop-backs Monday. According to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats, that’s the highest pressure-rate by any defense in a game since 2018. In addition, Lions’ running back Jahmyr Gibbs’ had 189 yards of combined offense from the line of scrimmage which exceeded the entire offense for the Raiders by 32 yards.

I couldn’t pass on this report from The Guardian. Adam Wainwright managed to survive 18 years amid the grueling schedule of Major League Baseball before a puppy ended his career. The 42-year-old called time on his long career at the end of the 2023 season after 478 games, 2,202 strikeouts, three All-Star appearances and a World Series title with the St Louis Cardinals, his only major league team. But when he lodged his official retirement papers to Major League Baseball, rather than listing health concerns or the opportunity to enjoy his $182m in career earnings, he gave his reason for stepping away from the game as “Because I got a puppy”, which gets by Quote of the Day.
