Thoughts for the Day, January 10, 2023: We have a document storage problem.

With all the legal issues the former president has with the proper storing of documents, one would think that President Biden or at least one of his advisers would have verified that Biden in his time as VP or senator didn’t have any classified government documents stored inappropriately or illegally. See my Onion of the Day.

On Friday I watched the outcome of the 14th failed vote for Speaker of the House and was fascinated how immediately following the alleged vote to adjourn for the evening, C-SPAN was able to show the lobbying of Representative Matt Gaetz by supporters of McCarthy as it was occurring on the chamber floor in full view of the camera.  Originally it appeared to me that Gaetz was not going to give in to the demands and change his vote. Although the vote for adjournment for the evening had passed, it had not been gaveled in so members were still able to change their votes.  Within minutes, Gaetz and other Republicans went to the podium to change their vote to not adjourn. It didn’t take a genius to determine that Gaetz was going to change his vote and a 15th vote would occur that would confirm McCarthy.

Speaker McCarthy got his wish.  We will find out soon what McCarthy had to give up to get the final votes.

One of the good things about driving over the weekend to Gulf Shores, Alabama, was that I didn’t get to watch the MSU/U of M basketball game.  You know it is an ugly offensive game when the winning team shoots less than 40% and commits 12 turnovers. Maybe it was good defense?

All you need to know about the future for the Detroit Lions is this.

  • Jared Goff ended the season with a string of 324 passes and nine games without an interception.  The fifth longest streak in NFL history.  He is the Lions quarterback for now and the future barring any injuries.
  • Between rookies James Houston, Aiden Hutchinson, Malcom Rodriguez and Josh Paschal, no rookie class in NFL history has had more sacks than Detroit’s (20.5) in 2022.
  • In just two games against the Packers, Kirby Joseph tied the record set by Brian Urlacher for most career interceptions off Rodgers. (He had a fourth one waived off because of a penalty to a defensive lineman)
  • Detroit’s rookie class led the league in tackles-for-loss (26), fumble recoveries (four), and tied for first in interceptions (seven).
  • After recovering from ACL surgery, rookie receiver Jamison Williams showed in the last two games he has the speed that will make him a defensive coordinators nightmare.
  • In addition to their own picks, the Lions also get the Rams 1st an 3rd round picks in the 2023 draft as a result of the Goff/Stafford trade. Due to the Rams having the worst record in NFL history in the year following a Super Bowl victory, the Lions will have the 6th overall pick in the 2023 draft.

Quote of the Day: “It rained in Southern California on Monday. It poured on TCU.”  ESPN staff writer, Dave Wilson in the opening line of his column reporting on the 65-7 University of Georgia victory over TCU in the CFP championship game.

Orchid of the Day:  The City of Cincinnati. As Leah and I were driving through Cincinnati on Saturday, I was touched by the outpouring of support for Buffalo Bills’ player Damar Hamlin who suffered cardiac arrest on Monday during an NFL game against the Cincinnati Bengals.  There were electronic billboard signs offering support and the number 3 was displayed on buildings and homes.

Onion of the Day:  President Biden. See above.

Question of the Day:  Will I ever win a Scrabble game against Leah?  It has been years and there is no end it sight.

Video of the Day: Dan Miller one more time.
