Thoughts for the Day, January 11, 2023: Damar Hamlin goes home

The amazing recovery of Damar Hamlin continues.

From the Associated Press today. Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin was released from a Buffalo hospital on Wednesday, more than a week after he went into cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated during a game at Cincinnati, after his doctors said they completed a series of tests.

A news release from the Bills quoted Dr. Jamie Nadler as saying: “We have completed a series of tests and evaluation and in consultation with the team physicians, we are confident that Damar can be safely discharged.” Nadler said Hamlin will continue his rehabilitation with the Bills.

New York’s Nassau County Republicans must be kicking themselves for not vetting George Santos’s resume when they had the chance in 2020. Now the county republicans who supported him in the most recent election want him removed from Congress.  A recent report from the NY Times includes the following.

When Representative George Santos of New York first expressed interest in running for a suburban New York City House seat in 2020, the Nassau County Republican Committee sent him a standard vetting questionnaire and asked to see his qualifications. The résumé Mr. Santos handed over was impressive, particularly for a political neophyte.

He claimed to have graduated in the top 1 percent of his class at Baruch College, earned an M.B.A. at New York University and more than doubled revenue as a project manager at Goldman Sachs, according to a copy of the two-page document obtained by The New York Times.

If the Nassau Republicans had dug into any of the claims, they would probably have found that much of Mr. Santos’s account was baldly fabricated. Instead, without another candidate interested in the race, they made a critical mistake: They took Mr. Santos’s word and offered their full backing, re-upping in 2022 to help deliver him to victory.

It is going to be interesting see how this plays out in the House.  Speaker McCarthy is not looking to take action against Santos because McCarthy does not want to see a special election if Santos is forced to resign or removed from office.   See my Onion of the Day.

For MIggy it is too little too late.

The Detroit Tigers announced today they are changing the dimensions of Comerica Park.  They’ll move the center-field fence from 422 feet to 412. They’ll drop the fence’s height there from 8.5 feet to 7 feet. They’ll also trim heights in right-center field (13 feet to 7), and in right field (8.5 feet to 7), which helps make Comerica Park something closer to a ballpark, fair to both hitters and pitchers.

How many times over the last 15 years have we seen the fake smile on Miggy’s face after hitting one to deep center field or the right center field power alley only to see it caught or bounce off the wall for a double? Too many to count.  Instead of chasing 500 homeruns two years ago, he probably would have been chasing 600 if he had played his entire career with the proposed dimensions.

I was first turned on to Vienna Teng upon hearing the U of M commercial on the B1G Network and Fox News as they played her song Level Up as part of the commercial. As a result, I started checking out her music on You Tube. In my Video of the Day I am sharing her official video of Level Up. Enjoy it.
