Thoughts for the Day, January 20, 2021: Hope and Unity and Amanda Gorman

The theme throughout the inauguration was hope and unity. Hope and unity for all of us regardless of gender, race, nationality, religion, age, sexual orientation, republican, democrat, conservative, liberal or whether you voted for Trump or voted for Biden. It was an inauguration that challenges us to put aside our divisions and work for the common good. It was an inauguration that spoke about honestly and about the challenges we face. It was an inauguration that provided hope that we the people working together can overcome these challenges and come out stronger in the end.

As I watched the inauguration ceremonies today, I felt energized. Energized that in two weeks time we went from having the Capitol stormed by knuckleheads to watching an inauguration on the same exact spot. It was a victory for we the people and democracy. It gives me faith. Faith that I was rapidly losing after the events of two weeks ago.

One of the things I have always enjoyed with the many inaugurations I have watched is seeing the former presidents sitting together on the stage. Seeing Obama, Bush, and Clinton together brings hope that we can work together and build on common ground. President Carter could not attend due to health and age issues. President Trump chose not to attend for his own personal reasons. Vice President Pence was there representing the outgoing administration.

I always watch on ABC and hearing George Stephanopoulos’s comments about Lady Gaga’s and JLO’s fashion was priceless. The performances by Lady Gaga, JLO and Garth Brooks were just right. Simple, classy and with no overperforming or over singing. Garth Brooks’s version of Amazing Grace was a pleasant surprise.

I totally enjoyed the pure passion and joy Vice President Harris showed while taking the oath of office. Her smile is contagious. President Biden’s speech was exactly as I expected. His message was strong with no looking back. Unity, hope, and we the people were the theme. He will never go down as a great orator but I usualy like what he has to say. His centrist philosophy is what this country needs at this point in time. He is the right person at the right time.

Inspite of all of the above, the stars of the inuauguration were Amanda Gorman and Reverend Dr. Sylvester Beaman. The young Amanda delivered a poem she wrote the night of January 6, 2021 after watching the siege of the Capitol. It was a performance that Americans will not forget for some time. It will be going viral on youtube. She is America’s next Maya Angelou.

Dr. Beaman delivered a benediction that was filled with passion and strength. His ability to deliver a message is a gift from God. Per Dr. Beaman, “I was just humbled and flushed with a whole lot of emotion. That also included reverential fear, because this is a god moment and I’m just humbled that the Lord has given me this opportunity.”

Stay safe. Wear your mask, Social distance. Wash your hands regularly. Get your vaccine.

Quote of the Day: “We will lead not merely by the example of our power but by the power of our example.” President Joe Biden.

Orchid of the Day: To First Lady Jill Biden for introducing us and the world to Amanda Gordon.

Onion of the Day: To Governor Whitmer for proposing a $5 billion covid relief package for Michigan without discussing it with the Republican legislative leadership prior to releasing it. I hope she heard what President Biden had to say today about working together.
