Thoughts for the Day, January 20, 2023: How he lived to be 81 is beyond my comprehension.

Per multiple sources, David Crosby, an original member of the Byrds and a founder of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young died at age 81. Mr. Crosby was inducted twice into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of both groups. His jazz influences and wonderful voice helped broaden the folk-rock era.

Crosby was living definition of the excesses of the 60’ and 70’s as he lived sex, drugs and rock and roll.  Considering his drug addiction, prison stint and health issues — diabetes, three heart attacks resulting in eight stents being placed in his chest, and a liver transplant necessitated from hepatitis C — David Crosby should have been gone a long time ago.

During an interview at age 77 he was as surprised as anyone that he was still alive. “Nobody has any clue why.  A whole lot of my friends are dead. I think my new motto is gonna be ‘Only the good die young.’

How he lived to be 81 is beyond my comprehension. See my Video of the Day.

The bad week in the press continues for Michigan’s football team. Yesterday, Jim Harbaugh admitted to possibly committing level two NCAA recruiting violations, but he adamantly denied the more serious level one violation of lying to NCAA investigators. Unless something changes, look for this to be a long drawn-out battle between the NCAA and U of M. The impact that the NCAA investigation will have on finalizing a new agreement with Harbaugh is anybody’s guess.

Today Michigan Athletic Department issued a statement that co-defensive coordinator Matt Weiss was terminated due to a police investigation into his potentially violating M policies on email privacy.

For over two years, I have been commenting on the inappropriate political prosecution of Nick Lyon and others in the Flint Water Crisis.

Yesterday multiple sources reported a Michigan Court of Appeals panel on Thursday upheld a lower court’s dismissal of charges against Michigan’s former chief medical executive Eden Wells and Flint’s former emergency manager Darnell Earley in the Flint water criminal case. The three-judge panel unanimously affirmed Genesee County Circuit Judge Elizabeth Kelly’s dismissal of their charges in a brief order that noted the questions raised in the prosecution’s appeal “are so unsubstantial as to need no argument or formal submission.” The Appeals Court panel was made up of judges Colleen O’Brien, Mark Cavanagh and Kathleen Jansen.

Following the ruling AG Nessel indicated she will appeal the case to the Michigan Supreme Court, which has already ruled on the unconstitutionality of the use of a single person grand jury in the case.  Over $60 million has been spent on the political prosecution to date, which does not include the $650 million civil court settlement the state agreed to on the case. AG Nessel continues to do the same thing and expects different results at the expense of the Michigan taxpayers, who are paying for not only her time but also for the defense attorneys because they are representing state employees.

I continue to write about Nessel getting shot down by the courts and expect she will admit defeat, but she never does.  Maybe I am the one who is insane.

Quote of the Day: “The streak is over! My 56-game streak of covering every Super Bowl that’s taken place is finished.”  Retired Detroit News sports reporter, Jerry Green who announced his streak of attending and reporting on the Super Bowl is over.  He is the only writer who has covered every Super Bowls, even though it wasn’t called the Super Bowl when he covered the first game.

Orchid of the Day: David Crosby, for living 81 years in spite of his abuses.

Onion of the Day: Florida Department of Education for rejecting the Advanced Placement course on African American studies a pilot program offered by the College Board.  “As presented, the content of this course is inexplicably contrary to Florida law and significantly lacks educational value,” Florida Department of Education in a letter to the College Board.

Question of the Day: How did David Crosby manage to live to be 81?
