Thoughts for the Day, January 27, 2022: A good justice retires. Three more police officers shot tonight in Houston.

Stephen Breyer

The shooting of police officers continues.  In Houston, Texas tonight three police officers were wounded during a chase of a suspected carjacker. Fortunately, their physical wounds are non-life threatening.

Per ABC News 13 in Houston, the man accused of injuring three police officers near downtown Houston has barricaded himself in a home in the Fifth Ward area, according to Houston police.  Roland Caballero was identified as the man who opened fire on the officers following a chase in the 2100 block of McGowen Street. Officers said they were responding to a disturbance call at 2:40 p.m. in the 1500 block of Tralle Street when a chase ensued. Caballero crashed out on McGowen where the gunshots were exchanged. At some point, Caballero managed to flee from the scene in a white Mercedes, according to HPD. According to sound from police radio transmissions, Caballero carjacked the white Mercedes and led police on another chase. That chase ended at an apartment complex in the Fifth Ward area, where Caballero has since been holed up. The officers, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital where they are stable, police said.  When is this country going to say enough with the violence and start addressing the root causes such as poverty, joblessness, mental health, drugs, illiteracy, food insecurity, and the breakdown of the family which lead to violence?  We think nothing of providing foreign aid all over the world, even though we have many problems at home that need to be addressed.

Per multiple sources the U.S. economy grew 1.7% in 4th quarter. The overall 2021 increase in the gross domestic product was the biggest in decades.  President Biden can use this good news.

Under the category that nothing ever goes smoothly, today multiple sources are reporting the top attorney for the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission resigned Wednesday, hours after the state Supreme Court heard arguments about the constitutionality of its maps. In an email sent to the commission, General Counsel Julianne Pastula announced her decision to leave the panel without much explanation. “The purpose of this letter is to provide official notice of my resignation as General Counsel,” Pastula wrote, adding that pursuant to her contract, she needed to give the commission a 30-day notice.

With President Biden having a chance to nominate the replacement of Chief Justice Breyer this country is facing further divide between the left and the right.  The confirmation of recent chief justices has been some of the most polarizing processes in our recent history as both sides pull out all stops to get their person in or to discredit the nominee.  The process the country went through in the nominations of Justice Thomas and Justice Kavanaugh are still etched in my memory.  In both instances, I was embarrassed for our country.

What are you doing to stop the violence?  Get vaccinated and get your booster.

Orchid of the Day:  Michigan men’s basketball team winning their game last night against Northwestern through guts, determination, and a next-man-up attitude.

Onion of the Day:  The referees in last night’s Michigan/Northwestern basketball game.  During the first four minutes of the game there were no stoppages of play with no violations or fouls being called.  Once Northwestern Coach Chris Collins complained about a foul that wasn’t called, the refs became whistle happy and called 46 fouls in the last 36 minutes, with an inordinate amount being offensive moving screens against both teams.  As a former basketball referee, I know how referees can ruin the flow of the game when they “become whistle happy”.  The look of astonishment on some of the players faces when they were called for a foul was very telling.  As I have learned, players know when they foul someone, and they know when they don’t.  When I see that many astonished faces on the players during the game, the players are letting everyone know the game is not being called appropriately.

Quote of the Day: It isn’t often Governor Whtmer and the Detroit News Editorial Board agree on anything, but when it comes to opening up schools they are as close as they will ever be.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said in an interview Thursday that Michigan school districts that are currently offering only virtual instruction should return students to classrooms for in-person learning. “98% of our districts in Michigan are in person right now. We’ve got some big ones that are not. I want to work with those districts to help support them so they can get kids back in school.”

And this from the Detroit News Editorial Board: “And with more tools and money to keep kids and staff safe, schools have run out of excuses to keep children from the classroom.”

I’ve been to two officer funerals and two firefighter funerals. They tear your heart apart.

      Wanda,
See my post for Friday. The eulogy by Jason Rivera’s wife and brother are gut wrenching. He just wanted to be a good cop from his early childhood.
      Tom
