Thoughts for the Day, January 6, 2023: Positive news out of Cincinnati. Insanity in Washington DC.

The news out of Cincinnati is very positive.

Per the latest reports from the NY Times, Drs. Pritts and Knight IV of the University of Cincinnati Medical Center during a new conference repeatedly thanked the Bills and Bengals medical staff for how quickly they provided aid to Hamlin, which they said saved his neurological function. Knight said the Bills medical staff promptly recognized that Hamlin had gone into cardiac arrest, and followed up by immediately resuscitating him.

Per multiple sources, today Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin was awake, could move his hands and feet, and was able to write with a pen to ask who won the game between the Bills and Bengals. “When he asked did we win, the answer is, yes, you know, Damar, you won, you’ve won the game of life,” Dr. Timothy A. Pritts said.

Dr. Pritts said Hamlin was able to hold hands with people in his hospital room. But Dr. Knight said it was “truly too early” to determine whether Hamlin might make a full recovery and perhaps return to professional football. The next big milestone for Hamlin, the doctors said, was breathing entirely on his own; Hamlin is still using a ventilator. Dr. Knight also said it was too early to tell whether Hamlin would regain finer motor function and that things like cognition, motion, speech, and language would need to be assessed in the future.

As I reflect on what happened with Hamlin, I can’t help but think about how lucky he was that the NFL has made significant changes in its safety protocols at games that may have saved Hamlin from long term brain damage.  In recent years, the NFL has required 30 medical professionals to be on hand to deal with emergencies and injuries.  Without these highly trained professionals on hand and being so quick to respond, the outlook tonight for Hamlin would not be so positive.

Things have progressed along way from the days of giving players salt pills, smelling salts, holding fingers in front of your face and asking how many and asking if a doctor in the stands during emergencies.  It is amazing many of us survived those days.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.  As I write tonight the House of Representatives have completed their tenth attempt to elect a speaker of the house.  Today, they have had four votes, with little or no time in between the votes.

Representative McCarthy continues to fail to obtain the necessary 218 votes needed for election yet he continues to get nominated, with 20 Republicans not voting for him. After the 10th unsuccessful vote tonight, the House was having trouble agreeing on whether to adjourn for the evening. So sad.

A special Orchid of the Day goes to Brad Bush, Chelsea High School Athletic Director for hiring Andrea Cabana as the head basketball coach for Chelsea’s boys varsity team. Instances of a women coaching a boys’ high school basketball team is very rare in the history of Michigan high school basketball..

Per the Detroit News. Cabana led the Grass Lake girls’ team to a state title in 2021 and she now has the Chelsea boys’ team off to a 6-0 start.  Cabana’s son is a member of the team, so Bush was very familiar with her as a coach and as a parent.  Cabana went through a competitive interview process which included some members of the boys’ team.  Per Bush, she was clearly the best candidate for the job.

Bush knows something about coaching a successful program at Chelsea. Prior to becoming the AD, Bush was a highly successful football coach at Chelsea who was recently inducted into the Michigan High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame. See my Quote of the Day

Quote of the Day: “What’s interesting is that we had a few of our veteran boys on the team involved in the (interview) process and talking to them, there just wasn’t a second thought with her being a woman.  They knew she was a good coach, and that was all that really mattered to them. I thought that when we hired her, there would be some people that might say something good or bad, but really, no one has really batted an eyelash, (or) said a word.  It sounds like all of this should be an issue, you know hiring a woman to coach a boys’ team and it hasn’t been. I didn’t look at it that way because her background and her ability to coach was clear from the get-go, so her being a woman was somewhat irrelevant, to be honest.”  Brad Bush, Chelsea High School AD

Orchid of the Day:  Michigan men’s basketball team for only committing three turnovers in their ten-point victory over Penn State.  Last night’s game was a rare occurrence as Penn State has the lowest turnover rate in the country and Michigan has the second lowest turnover rate.  As expected, there were very few turnovers in the game as Penn State committed only eight turnovers.

Onion of the Day:  The Republican members of the House of Representatives.  It would be funny if it wasn’t so embarrassing.

Question of the Day:  What is the over/under on how many votes it will take for the House of Representatives to elect a speaker of the house?
