Thoughts for the Day: January 8, 2021: The fallout begins

The fallout from Wednesday’s insurrection started last night and continued throughout the day.

  • Facebook has suspended President Trump’s account until the end of his term and Twitter has suspended his account indefinitely as they are concerned about Trump using the platforms for further incitement of violence. Per Nolan Finley of the Detroit News, “Had they done this on his first day as president, he might still be president.”
  • Betsy Devos, Secretary of Education, and Elaine Chao, Secretary of Transportion resigned yesterday. In addition many high ranking staff members resigned today.
  • More than 80 people have been arrested, including the person sitting with his feet on Speaker Pelosi’s desk. The FBI has posted pitctures of people who participated in the insurrection on their Most Wanted List and seeking information on each person. A $50,000 reward leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) who planted a pipe bomb is also being offered. Many more arrests are expected in the coming days and weeks.
  • Five people have died, including one Capitol Police officer who died Thursday from the injuries he obtained on Wednesday.
  • Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi is going to initiate impeachment charges against President Trump if Vice President Pence and the president’s cabinet refuse to invoke the 25th admendment.

To nobody’s surprise, President Trump announced he will not be attending the innauguration on January 20.

In the sports world, Tommy Lasorda, retired manager extraordinaire of the Los Angeles Dodgers, passed away today. In addition to being a great manager, he was an outstanding ambassador for the game he loved.

The University of Michigan extended Head Football Coach Jim Harbaugh’s contract through the 2025 season. Ohio State fans must be jumping for joy.

Yesterday, 4,112, people in the U.S. died from covid-19, a daily record. This is !,000 more than died and the 9/11 attack. Four thousand deaths in one day, was not imagined by even the most pessimistic forecasters when the virus started in March and April.
