Thoughts for the Day, June 1, 2021: A great weekend.

It was a great Memorial Day weekend as my daughter Katy, her husband Brad, and our grandchildren Alaina(8), Nolan(6) and Kaylen(3) arrived on Friday evening and left Monday morning.  The weekend was filled with too many trips to Kilwins, an early 70th birthday celebration and dinner for me, Nolan hitting hundreds of golf balls on the driving range topped off with Brad and me taking Nolan and Alaina to the Charlevoix Municipal Golf Course where they played golf on a regulation 9-hole course for the first time.  On Saturday night, we sent Brad and Katy out on a date while Leah and I stayed with the kids.  Alaina kicked our butts in Quirkle.  Proving I am no smarter than a 3rd grader.

Nolan was putting on a show on the Crooked Tree driving range throughout the weekend as people were amazed that a 6 year-old had such a good swing and could hit the ball so well.  The pro at Crooked Tree, Corey May, came out of the clubhouse to watch Nolan swing.  Corey had given Nolan a lesson last August so Corey was checking on his young student.  After a few minor tweaks to Nolan’s swing, Nolan was crushing it with a baby draw.  At one point I said to Nolan, “Now you are just showing off.”  I am not worried about Brad ever beating me, but I figure I have about 6 years before Nolan has my number.

Another joy of the weekend was watching Kaylen play with the doll house we have here.  My father made the doll house for Katy when Katy was the same age as Kaylen.  Fortunately, Katy took good care of the doll house and Leah and I stored it for times like this.  Leah and I got so much joy watching Kaylen play with the doll house just like her mother did over 30 years ago.  I know my dad was smiling down on us this weekend.

I am not sure who is advising Governor Whitmer as it relates to her Florida trip. Either she or her advisors seem to have forgot the old adage, “It is not the crime, but the cover-up that will get you.” The constant change of stories and hiding of the facts is killing her credibility with many of her supporters, including me.  I need to be able to trust what I am being told is the truth when it comes to determining who I will vote.  My trust in her is waning.

I guess I wasn’t the only one upset about the Trump Republican’s vote last Friday to derail a bi-partisan congressional commission into the January 6 insurrection.  Here is what Republican Congressman from Grand Rapids Peter Meijer tweeted yesterday as part of his Memorial Day message. “Memories + knowledge that for too many it’s a reminder of a father, mother, wife, husband, son, daughter gone. Our shared obligation to make this nation worthy of their sacrifice. And then there are those who take this sacrifice for granted, waxing patriotic while salivating for civil war. Claiming they need to destroy the Republic in order to save it in the ultimate betrayal of oaths sworn. Those treacherous snakes can go straight to hell.”

Stay safe.  Wash your hands regularly. Social Distance.  Wear your mask properly.  Schedule your vaccine.

Orchid of the Day: Helio Castroneves for winning his 4th Indianapolis 500 on Sunday.  Now maybe people will remember him for more than winning Dancing with the Stars.

Onion of the Day:  I am giving the onion a pass today. Quote of the Day: “Democracy is more than a form of government. It’s a way of being; it’s a way of seeing the world. Democracy means the rule of the people—the rule of the people.  Not the rule of monarchs, not the rule of the moneyed, not the rule of the mighty—literally, the rule of the people.” President Biden
