Thoughts for the Day, June 9, 2022: A day of reckoning.

You cannot make this up.  The three top leading Republican Party contenders for governor were thrown off the ballot for not meeting the signature requirements on their petitions.  Now a fourth is arrested today for charges related to the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.  Per the NY Times, Ryan Kelley, a Republican running for governor in Michigan who was at the Capitol during the Jan. 6 attack, was arrested at his home in Allendale, Mich., on Thursday morning, according to Mara R. Schneider, a special agent with the F.B.I. Mr. Kelley is the first person running for election in a major state or federal race to be charged in connection with the attack. According to a criminal complaint, Mr. Kelley was charged with committing violence against a person or property on restricted grounds, damaging federal property, disorderly conduct and entering a restricted building or grounds without permission.

The residents of Uvalde, Texas are going to have a hard time healing after the May 24, attack.  The divide between the parents and the school police department is widening everyday as more and more information is coming to light as to why it took over an hour to storm the classroom, while students and teachers were wounded and needed immediate medical attention.  Reports today indicate more than a dozen of the 33 children and three teachers originally in the two classrooms remained alive during the 1 hour and 17 minutes from the time the shooting began inside the classrooms to when four officers made entry, law enforcement investigators have concluded. By that time, 60 officers had assembled on scene. Investigators have been working to determine whether any of those who died could have been saved if they had received medical attention sooner, according to an official with knowledge of the effort. But there is no question that some of the victims were still alive and in desperate need of medical attention. One teacher died in an ambulance. Three children died at nearby hospitals, according to the documents. Based on transcripts, it is clear Police Chief Arredondo was concerned about his officer’s safety as he was waiting for equipment to arrive.  Unfortunately, there were students and teachers who needed immediate medical attention.  I have learned from my federal agent daughter Katy to wait until all the information is gathered before jumping to a conclusion.  No matter what the final report, Chief Arredondo’s decision to wait is going to be hard to accept as the appropriate course of action by the parents and families who had family members who died because of the delay. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of Uvalde as they work through this horrendous tragedy. See my Video of the Day.

It is has taken over 17 months, but tonight the public is going to finally get information regarding the January 6, 2021, insurrection.  The shock I had on January 6 as I watched this insurrection has been with me ever since and I expect it will be with me for the remainder of my life.  I don’t expect today’s hearing to change many people’s mind regardless of the facts.  That is where we are as a country.  Once Mitch McConnel and Kevin McCarthy quickly changed their opinion of January 6 less than a week after the insurrection, I know that facts do not matter, regardless of what I witnessed on January 6, when a Confederate flag flew in our Capitol and a gallows with a noose with saying “hang Mike Pence” written on it. In the Civil War, thousands of U.S. soldiers gave their lives to keep the Confederate flag out of the Capitol. Yet on January 6 it flew within our Capitol.  Nothing more needs to be said.

Elections Matter. Pray for peace and tolerance. What are you doing to stop the violence?

Orchid of the Day:  The House Select Committee for finally providing the information I have been waiting 17 months to receive.

A special Orchid of the Day:  Liz Cheney, for having the guts to do the right thing regardless of the political fallout.

Onion of the Day:  Mitch McConnel and Kevin McCarthy for preventing an independent study of the January 6, insurrection.

Quote of the Day:  “We want secure and safe schools and we want gun laws that won’t make it so easy for the bad guys to get the damn guns. We are in a window of opportunity right now that we have not been in before. A window where it seems like real change can happen. We need to invest in mental healthcare. We need safer schools. We need to restrain sensationalized media coverage. We need to restore our family values. We need to restore our American values and we need responsible gun ownership. Is this a cure-all? Hell no, but people are hurting.” Matthew McConaughey at the White House, following the elementary school mass shooting last month in his hometown of Uvalde that killed 19 students and two teachers.

Question of the Day:  Will the House Select Committee hearings provide enough evidence to prevent Trump from winning the Republican nomination for President of the U.S. in 2024?

Hello Tom, re Question of the Day; The question for me becomes, will the House Select Committee present enough evidence to compel the DOJ to bring charges for the attempted coup, and then get a conviction. If so this maybe fatal to Trump getting the nomination. However, as you probably know in the current Republican world it doesn’t ensure he not get the nomination. Hopefully, at the very least if he does get the nomination he’ll be running his campaign from a prison cell…….respectfully.

      Bob,
It would be nice if the DOJ could make a case against Trump that he would be found guilty of a felony so he cannot run for office. However, I do not see that happening in a timely manner. I am counting on there being enough Republicans who realize there is no future in hitching their future to the Trump.
