Thoughts for the Day, March 14, 2022: More questions than thoughts

Lots of random thoughts and questions.

How does Putin think this is going to end?  Does he forget how it ended for Hitler and Mussolini?

As I watch Putin’s occupation of Ukraine it makes me wonder. Why have the European Union countries not provided stronger defenses for their respective countries?  Were the lessons of World War II quickly forgotten?  Did they forget that having a strong defense is one of the best ways to prevent war?  Did their politicians think that peace was a given and spending on national defense was not necessary?  As the saying goes, ‘Those who do not study history are destined to repeat it.”

Why am I not surprised that Halliburton continues to operate oil fields in Russia?

After a very long legal battle, the Sackler family, which were the owners of Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, faced families of those who died from addiction to the drug.  Donna Mazurek, from Michigan, who spoke at an extraordinary Zoom session in a federal bankruptcy courtroom in White Plains, N.Y., on Thursday told the Sacklers, . “You murdered my daughter and destroyed my family.”  Mazurek’s daughter Paige, was prescribed Purdue Pharma’s opioid painkiller OxyContin after a root canal, became addicted, spiraled into heroin, and overdosed when she was 22.

It took 99 days of a supposedly contentious lockout, but baseball will be back in full force this year with a full 162 game schedule crammed into two less weeks than normal.  Look for a many more injuries to players and look for many star players being rested despite fans paying good money to watch them play. On the bright side, we will be able to watch Miggy’s countdown to 3,000 hits during April and May.  He only needs 13 hits so he should make it by mid-May.

Tom Brady is brilliant.  He announces his unretirement five minutes before the NCAA March Madness selection show, knowing that March Madness trumps any announcement he made, thus keeping the reporters away from his door.  It also allows all the free agents on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 48 hours to re-up with the Bucs before tossing their hat into the free agency ring.

Instead of watching the NCAA selection show, I went on a bike ride.  My head felt Juwan Howard and Michigan had not earned a spot in the tournament, but my heart wanted them to make it.

One of the things I love about the NCAA tournament is learning about the nicknames for some of the lesser-known schools, such as the following:

Catamounts of Vermont

Jackrabbits of South Dakota State.

Ramblers of Loyola Chicago

Gaels of St. Mary

Racers of Murray State

Dons of San Francisco (Bill Russell’s and K.C Jones’ school)

Zips of Akron

Peacocks of St. Peter’s

Horned Frogs of TCU

Mocs (for Mockingbird) of Chattanooga

Lancers of Longwood

Blue Hens of Delaware

Spiders of Richmond

Gamecocks of Jacksonville State

Pray for peace and cool heads. What are you doing to stop the violence?  Get vaccinated and get your booster.

Orchid of the Day: Tom Brady-How much more does the GOAT have in him?

Onion of the Day:  Tucker Carlson, of Fox News.  Yesterday, per Heather Cox Richardson, David Corn of Mother Jones broke another news story: a Russian government agency distributed a 12-page document to media outlets telling them, “It is essential to use as much as possible fragments of broadcasts of the popular Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who sharply criticizes the actions of the United States [and] NATO, their negative role in unleashing the conflict in Ukraine, [and] the defiantly provocative

Quote of the Day:  “He’s an actor, and he understands that he has a role to play, and he will play the role.  Once you enter the role, you play it to the end. You have a larger responsibility to the citizens and to your country’s image in the world.”  Anne Applebaum, a journalist and Ukraine expert, recently said on NPR that she thought President Zelensky might never flee the country even if he wishes he had never run for president, he understands that he now symbolizes something larger than himself.
