Thoughts for the Day, March 15, 2022: The NHL has a potential problem and Dolly Parton continues to show her outstanding class.

The National Hockey League has a problem that is only going to get worse in the next months. As of January 2022, there were 37 Russians playing in the NHL.  There are nearly 1.4 million Ukrainians in Canada, most of which are in the western part of Canada, home of the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames.  Some of the Russian players, including Washington Capital’s star. Alex Ovechkin, have been vocal in support for President Putin. When it comes to hockey, there is no love between Canada and Russia.  Over the last couple of decades, Russian players have been accepted in the sport by fans.  Whether that continues is a big question the NHL is facing.

There is class, and then there is Dolly Parton.  She has more class than most of us dream of having. The long-time country singer with some crossover hits, has asked to be pulled from the 2022 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ballot because she feels she is not worthy of consideration.  “Even though I am extremely flattered and grateful to be nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I don’t feel that I have earned that right,” Parton, 76, wrote in a statement posted to social media. “I really do not want votes to be split because of me, so I must respectfully bow out.”

Ginni Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, is entitled to free speech just like me and everyone else.  However, she needs to understand that what she does and says is also a reflection on her husband, and indirectly the U.S. Supreme Court.  Thus, when she signs a letter saying, the congressional investigation into the January 6, 2021, insurrection of the Capitol “brings disrespect to our country’s rule of law” and “legal harassment to private citizens who have done nothing wrong,” her words have weight.  These are words that reflect on her husband and the U.S. Supreme Court. It also, shows her total disregard of the facts. Attacking our Capitol to try overturn the presidential election is what shows total disregard of the country’s rule and laws.  Holding those accountable for the insurrection is what is expected of law enforcement and congress.  Anything less would bring disrespect to our country’s rule of law and would be an afront to all the citizens who accept the results of the election, whether they voted for Biden or Trump.

I have never understood how a person can hate someone just because they are different, especially if the only difference is skin color, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, intelligence, etc.  Unfortunately, history has shown that many wars have been fought for these reasons alone.   When I read about the sickening assault of a women of Asian descent, it turns my stomach that someone can be so cruel and filled with hate just because someone is different.  Per the NY Times, as captured by a security camera, the woman passed the man on her way into the building. He called her an anti-Asian, misogynistic slur and she ignored him. Moments later he comes up behind her and hits her in the head with a roundhouse right hand. The force of the blow knocks the woman to the ground. As she lies there, her attacker bends down and pummels her repeatedly with both hands for the next minute, more than 125 blows altogether. He then stomps on her seven times and spits on her before walking away. On Monday, the Yonkers Police Department and the Westchester County district attorney announced that Tammel Esco, 42, of Yonkers had been charged with attempted murder and assault, both as hate crimes, because of the attack.  In my opinion, there is no punishment that is too cruel for a person who does something like this.

Pray for peace. What are you doing to stop the violence?  Get vaccinated and get your booster.

Orchid of the Day: Milan Bolden-Morris is making history as a new member of the Michigan football coaching staff. Bolden-Morris has been hired as a graduate assistant coach on Jim Harbaugh’s staff and becomes the first female GA at a Power 5 program. She will work on the offensive staff, specifically with quarterbacks, the school announced Tuesday.

Onion of the Day:  Tammel Esco for attacking a 67-yearold woman just because she was of Asian descent.

Quote of the Day: “We join the National Hockey League in condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the loss of innocent life.  We urge and hope for a peaceful resolution as quickly as possible. The Capitals also stand in full support of our Russian players and their families overseas. We realize they are being put in a difficult situation and stand by to offer our assistance to them and their families.”  The Washington Capital’s in a statement ahead of their first game of the season against the Edmonton, Oilers.

Your comments on Dolly Parton are well deserved. One of her greatest achievements is Imagination Library that mails a book monthly to a child from birth until they enter school
