After the mass shooting in Atlanta last week I asked how many more people were going to die before we start addressing the mental health issues in this country. I ask it again now that 10 more have died in Colorado as a result of a mass shooting yesterday. Unfortunately, I know the answer to my question. As one who lost my mother-in-law in a mass shooting 46 years ago this month, my heart and prayers go out to the families and friends of the victims. Their lives will never be the same. The long term impact is immeasurable.
Lawyer Sidney Powell, who went around the country claiming election fraud and the election was stolen, is claiming in a new court filing that reasonable people wouldn’t have believed as fact her assertions of fraud after the 2020 presidential election. The election infrastructure company Dominion Voting Systems sued Powell for defamation after she pushed lawsuits and made appearances in conservative media. Dominion claims that Powell knew her election fraud accusations were false and hurtful to the company. In a new court filing, Powell’s attorneys write that she was sharing her “opinion” and that the public could reach “their own conclusions” about whether votes were changed by election machines. Powell’s defense lawyers wrote in a court filing on Monday. “Indeed, Plaintiffs themselves (Dominion) characterize the statements at issue as ‘wild accusations’ and ‘outlandish claims.’ They are repeatedly labelled ‘inherently improbable’ and even ‘impossible.’ Such characterizations of the allegedly defamatory statements further support Defendants’ (Powell’s) position that reasonable people would not accept such statements as fact but view them only as claims that await testing by the courts through the adversary process.” Sydney and her team of lawyers want it both ways. They want to be able to prance all over the country spreading lies and false stories about people, politicians and companies, but do not want to be held liable for their action when proven wrong. Does that surprise anyone?
What was the NCAA thinking? Did they think that no one would notice or the women student athletes would sit back and take the inferior conditions the women were forced to endure in their bubble in San Antonio versus what the men have in Indianapolis? Thank God for social media for making us aware of the NCAA’s ongoing double standard. Don’t let anyone kid you. It is always about the money with the NCAA.
Former Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Director, NicK Lyon, continues to be held in limbo as he tries to mount a defense of the absurd manslaughter charges against him as a result of the Flint water crisis. The State, who must pay for his defense, wants to cap his lawyer fees at $175,000 and the judge in the case has refused to release the details of the charges that were filed against him by the archaic one man grand jury. It is next to impossible to mount a defense when one doesnn’t know the charges and your defense attorney doesn’t know if he/she is getting paid properly. Keep in mind the State had no problem signing off on the 30% ($192 million) the Flint resident’s lawyers received as part of the $640 million civil settlement. This was money taken from the Flint residents who have a much greater need than the lawyers.
