Thoughts for the Day, March 29, 2021: This pandemic is far from ending. Wear your mask in public.

Per the NY Times, President Biden on Monday called on governors and mayors to maintain or reinstate mask-wearing orders, saying that because of “reckless behavior,” the coronavirus was again spreading fast, threatening the progress the nation has made so far against the pandemic. Earlier in the day, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, issued perhaps her most impassioned warning to date about a possible fourth surge of the coronavirus, saying she feels a sense of “impending doom.” The nation has “so much reason for hope, but right now I’m scared. I am asking you to just hold on a little longer, to get vaccinated when you can, so that all of those people that we all love will still be here when this pandemic ends,”

My best friend George called this a few weeks ago when he told me that MSU guard Rocket Watts would be transfering from Michigan State when the season ended. Today, Watts announced he was entering the transfer portal. When recruited out of high school, Watts was the number 30 ranked player in the country. After making the B!G all freshmen team last year, this year was a struggle from the onset as Watts was moved to point guard from his natural shooting guard position. It was a failed experiment that never worked. By the time, Coach Izzo realized his mistake, Watt’s confidence had taken a major nose dive.

Whan watching the NCAA tournament with me, Leah gets tired of me complaining about players missing free throws, especially when I remind her they call them free throws for a reason. They are all but free points if you take your time and shoot it naturally. There is no reason college level players shouldn’t be shooting 75% at “charity stripe”. Well last night Alabama’s free throw shooting cost them the game. Bama missed 14 free throws including two in the last 20 seconds of regulation. They ended up getting blown out in overtime. If Bama just shot 50% from the “stripe” for the day they would have won in reguation by 2 points.

Michigan Republican Party Chaiman, Ron Weiser, learned on Friday that words matter. Even when you are in the supposedly friendly confines of a Republican party luncheon, you need to choose your words carefully and wisely. Quips and smartass comments do not cut it anymore. Someone is recording what your are saying. The last 48 hours have been a mad scramble of damage control for Weiser. His choice of words were atrocious, inappropriate and wrong.

Michigan’s womens basketball team faced a major scare on the flight home from San Antonio following their loss to Conneticut in the sweet 16. While flying in a severe storm the cabin pressure in the plane dropped so much the oxygen masks were automatically released to the passengers and the plane made an emergency landing in Evansville, Indiana. A few hours later the team flew safely home to AA. My guess is that the team was no longer upset about losing the game as they were probably just happy to be home safely. Sometimes, it takes something like this to remind all of us that winning and losing basketball games mean nothing in the game of life.

Stay safe. Wear a mask properly. Wash your hands regularly. Social distance. Schedule your vaccine.

Quote of the day: “With his inappropriate comments on Friday, Ron Weiser went from a Reagan Republican to a Trump Republican just like that.” Anonymous.

Orchid of the day: Michigan’s mens basketball team for their dominating performance Sunday evening against Florida State.

Onion of the Day: A 19-year-old man from Taylor is facing five years in prison for a felony charge after he allegedly crashed Friday into a vehicle and fled the scene. A 107-year-old passenger later died from her injuries, police said. This actually deserves a lot more than onions. After living 107 years it does not seem right to leave this world in this horrific manner.
