Last night was a special night at the old ballpark in Detroit as Miguel Cabrera passed Omar Vizquel to become the all-time Venezuelan-born player in history of Major League Baseball as Miguel moved up to number 43 on the all-time MLB hit list. Cabrera is now the all-time Venezuelan-born player in hits, runs, RBI, and home runs. For the remainder of Cabrera’s career, he is going to moving up the MLB list for hits, RBI and home runs. Every week, MLB will have someone in the Tiger dugout who authenticates the ball each time Cabrera passes someone on a list. He is not the hitter he once was but he still knows how to hit. It will be fun to watch this happen over the next two years. I hope is body can hold up so he can get to 500 homeruns and 3,000 hits.
Liz Cheney’s ouster as the number 3 ranking house Republican makes me wonder why former president Trump has such power in his party at this point in time. No president in my life time has stayed relevant in the party after not winning a second term. Truman, Johnson, Ford, Carter, and Bush were relegated to the background of the party. They may have been respected in their party after losing a second term, but at no time did any of their fellow party members hang their personal future on being loyal to any of these former presidents. Trump is the exception and I have a hard time understanding why.
Another thing I continue to struggle with is why there is such a great desire to make it hard to vote if a person who is eligible. It just doesn’t seem right to me. If you are a citizen in this country and you meet the voting age, we should be making it easy for you to vote. The technology and know how exists to make sure it is easy to vote while at the same time assuring no fraudulent voting. It makes no sense to me.
I am not sure I agree with this, but I give Ohio Governor Mike DeWine credit for thinking outside the box. Yesterday he announcedthat the state would give five people $1 million each in return for having been vaccinated as part of a weekly lottery program. The lottery, whose legality could raise questions, will be paid for by federal coronavirus relief funds, The first of five weekly drawings will be held on May 26 and the Ohio Lottery would conduct them. I am not sure that Congress had this in mind when they allocated funds to states and municipalities for vaccine distribution.
Did Enbridge comply with Governor Whitmer’s executive order and shut down Line-5 today? I am betting not.
Stay safe, wash your hands regularly, social distance, wear your mask properly and schedule your vaccine.
Orchid of the Day: Piston Head Coach Dwane Casey for getting a well-deserved extension of his contract. He is doing a great job bringing the youngest team in the NBA into a competitive team. Watch out in 2-3 years.
Onion of the Day: I am in a good mood, so no onion today.
Quote of the Day: “What an honor it is to share the field with the greatness that is Miguel Cabrera. It’s just a remarkable feat what he was able to do tonight. It’s something I will be able to look back on and just be amazed by. That I was here for this game, that I started and got to share the field with him.” Detroit starting pitcher Casey Mize on Miguel Cabrera becoming the all-time hit leader for a Venezuelan-born player in history of Major League Baseball. A second Quote of the Day: “I know that some may say, ‘DeWine, you’re crazy! This million-dollar drawing idea of yours is a waste of money.’ But truly, the real waste at this point in the pandemic — when the vaccine is readily available to anyone who wants it — is a life lost to COVID-19.” Ohio governor DeWine.
Saw Liz Cheney interviewed by Brett Baer. She is one tough cookie. He pushed her hard and she didn’t back down.. Could this break up the Republican party ?
Mike
She comes by it honestly. Dad didn’t back down very often. Thanks for reading the blog.
