I love this interchange between the NASA command center and the astronauts upon the first successful night landing. “We welcome you back to planet Earth, and thanks for flying SpaceX,” Michael Heiman, a SpaceX mission control official, told the astronauts. “For those of you enrolled in our frequent flier program, you have earned 68 million miles on this voyage.” “Resilience is back on planet Earth and we’ll take those miles,” replied Mike Hopkins, the NASA astronaut commanding the mission, “Are they transferable?” Humor goes along way!
I am not much of a football guy, especially when it comes to the NFL draft. After last week’s NFL draft, it is the first time in as long as I can remember that every report I read and most of the comments I heard from friends who know this stuff that the Lions seemed to get the draft right. One of my friends even said, that next year the Lions will have one of the top 5 offensive lines in the NFL. Anyone who knows anything about football knows that you cannot win without a being strong in the trenches. Just maybe it will no longer be the same old Lions a few years from now.
History was made this weekend when Medina Spirit won the Kentucky Derby, giving trainer, Bob Baffert, a record seventh victory in the Derby. The most exciting two minutes in sport did not disappoint as four horses were within 2 lengths at the finish. Once again, Secretariats record of 159.4 set in 1973, still stands as the fastest derby ever.
I can never watch the Kentucky Derby without thinking of 1974 when Leah, myself, my friend George and his date decided to attend the 100th running of the Kentucky Derby. We shared a beautiful sunny day on the infield of Churchill Downs with 80,000 revelers and only one rest area. The gates opened at 10:00 AM when we arrived. The Derby was scheduled to start at 5:30. With all the drinking and “smoking” and only one rest area you can imagine what it was like on the infield. By the time the Derby started, my friend George and his date left and watched the race at a local bar. Leah and I stuck it out. She was sitting on my shoulders while I was standing by the rail when her horse came by in first place. She grabbed my long hair and started jockeying back and forth like she was a jockey. Somewhere in our house we may have an uncashed winning ticket for the 100th running of the Derby.
Stay safe. Wear your mask properly. Wash your hands regularly. Social distance. Schedule your vaccine.
Quote of the Day: “My job is to report this mess, fairly, objectively, dispassionately, and to put it and keep it in some kind of perspective. And, yes, absolutely, to hold players, coaches and the front office accountable — for the bad and the good.” Chris McCoskey, Detroit Tiger beat writer for the Detroit News.
Orchid of the Day: To the love of my life, Leah, who celebrates her birthday on Tuesday May, 4. Anyone who can put up with me for over 50 years has to be special.
Onion of the Day: Detroit City Councilman Gabe Leland on Monday admitted he “crossed a line” after pleading guilty to misconduct in office and resigning from Detroit’s City Council
Leah is indeed a Saint, happy birthday Saint Leah of Arbor.
