Thoughts for the Day, May 7, 2021: Lots of thoughts.

I am not very thrilled with the lack of transparency by Governor Whitmer.  I agree with Nolan Finley who said today in his column, “I’ve been covering Michigan governors since Bill Milliken, and I’ve never seen one more secretive than Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. The governor guards public information as if it were her own personal treasure.”  When you are the governor everything you do is public information.  Your privacy went away when you accepted the oath of office.

With our problems with getting people to get vaccinated, why don’t we train Amazon delivery people to give vaccines to the home-bound.  Have a nurse travel with them in case of any issues.  Who knows it might work.

The Tigers finally starting hitting.  Unfortunately, they stopped fielding.  Yesterday they gave up 7 unearned runs to the Red Sox, including 4 in the bottom of the 8th inning after taking the lead in the top of the 8thHow can you be in the top 5 in starting pitching and have the worst record in baseball?

Per a recent poll reported by Heather Cox Richardson, 70% of all Republicans believe that the presidential election was stolen from Donald Trump.  What am I not seeing?

The number of Americans seeking unemployment aid fell last week to 498,000, the lowest point since the viral pandemic struck 14 months ago and a sign of the job market’s growing strength as businesses reopen and consumers step up spending. At the same time, the pace of applications is still well above the roughly 230,000 level that prevailed before the viral outbreak tore through the economy in March of last year. In the meantime, I am seeing help wanted signs all over town.  Fast food places are no longer fast because they cannot get help.  The restaurant business is struggling to open up because no one wants to put their unemployment checks in jeopardy.  The shortage in sports officials continue to get worse. Something is out of balance when the jobs are there yet people do not want to take them.

Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen said on Friday that April’s jobs report was an indicator that the U.S. has a long road to economic recovery, but described the growth as continued progress. In the meantime, the U.S. equity markets reached record levels today.  It is hard to make sense of anything related to the economy and equity markets.  Hold on for dear life.  Who knows how this will all shake out.

Per the Detroit News, Detroit Police Chief James Craig, one of the longest-serving police chiefs in the city’s history, will run in a bid to challenge Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in next year’s gubernatorial race, a source close to the chief said Friday. Craig, who is expected Monday to announce his retirement from the department, told The Detroit News he will follow that press conference with one discussing his future plans. The chief acknowledged he has discussed a potential candidacy with both state and national Republican officials. If he gets the nomination, it will be a tremendous race for governor.

Stay safe, wash your hands regularly, social distance, wear your mask properly and schedule your vaccine.

Quote of the Day: “The 2020 presidential election was not stolen. Anyone who claims it was is spreading THE BIG LIE, turning their back on the rule of law, and poisoning our democratic system.”  Representative Liz Cheney, Republican, Wyoming

Orchid of the Day:  Josh Baker is the new head basketball coach at River Rouge.  Baker had tremendous success during his eight years at Southfield Christian, leading the program to an 181-30 record and five state championships, three straight Class D titles from 2012-14, then another Class D state title in 2018 and a Division 4 state championship in 2019 before joining Nate Oats’ staff at Alabama.  May the tradition continue.

Onion of the Day:  Governor Whitmer for her lack of transparency.
