On this day of honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. I start with two Quotes of the Day from him that resonate with me today.
“Here is the true meaning and value of compassion and nonviolence, when it helps us to see the enemy’s point of view, to hear his questions, to know his assessment of ourselves. For from his view, we may indeed se the basic weakness of our own condition, and if we are mature, we may learn and grow and profit from the wisdom of the brothers who are called the opposition.”
“In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”

‘Text your friends. Text your fellow Lion fans. Text your family and everyone else. Take advantage of this historic day because the last time you won a playoff game, texting didn’t even exist.” NBC announcer Mike Tirico as Lion’s QB Jared Goff was taking the final snap while in Victory Formation.
“Finally, just, finally being in these games, being in these moments, it feels good. When I first got here, I knew that was the goal, just to get our foot in the door. But now that we’re in, it’s time to kick that (expletive) down.” Penei Sewell, the Lions’ All-pro tackle
“This is just the beginning, boys. We’ve got three more of these (expletive). Next week, at home, at our place, against whoever the (expletive) wants to come here, let’s go.” Lions QB Jared Goff, in the locker room following yesterday’s win.
“The atmosphere was absurd. It was everything I imagined, and more. Running out there to start that game, it was nuts. … It was cool. I mean, I’m not giving you guys good words here, but it was just magical.” Lions’ center Frank Ragnow,
“What’s crazy is, I was coming down for pregame warmup and you could just feel it. It was humming. The building was humming. And I swear you could feel the electricity in the tunnel when I was coming down, and it only just grew from there. For two years now, this building’s been rockin’ but it was different today. That was a whole ‘nother level, which is what the playoffs are all about.” Lions’ head coach Dan Campbell.
“What a battle this was. Goff and Stafford parried like expert swordsmen, clinking their blades so deftly they had time to twirl their mustaches between thrusts. Goff calmly whipped passes to Amon-Ra St. Brown, to Jameson Williams, to Josh Reynolds, while Stafford dropped bombs to Cooper Kupp and the astonishing rookie, Puka Nacua.” Mitch Albom, Detroit Free Press columnist.
“He’s their quarterback. He’s playing great. He led them to a win today. I’m happy for him. I thought he played excellent today … (the fans) should be proud of him. They should be cheering for him.” Former Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford on Jared Goff.
“We got to finish the drill. You can’t get content with getting out of the first round.” Lions’ cornerback C.J. Gardner-Johnson
“We’re doing things that haven’t been done in a while. But we got to keep going. Celebrate today but move on tomorrow.” Lions all-pro receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown
And finally, this quote which CBS announcer Jim Nantz shared during the Bills/Steelers game today that he received while meeting with the Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott who was talking about what his father told him about coaching. It really resonates with me, and it describes why the Lions’ head coach has been so successful.
“The players don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

Quote of the Day: All of the above
Orchid of the Day: Detroit Free Press subscribers who pushed back hard on Free Press sports columnist Carlos Monarrez (Onion of the Day) when he said Matthew Stafford lacked graciousness when he didn’t say in his post-game comments that he was happy for Detroit fans.
The beautiful thing about Detroit Lions’s fans is that they understand football and they understand that Matthew Stafford gave more to this city both on and off the field for twelve years than any Lion in history. In fact, he still is giving as he comes back multiple times during the year to work with the charities, he and his wife Kelly started in Detroit.
Onion of the Day: Detroit Free Press sports columnist Carlos Monarrez for saying that Matthe Stafford lacked graciousness when he didn’t say in his post-game comments that he was happy for Detroit fans.
Question of the Day: One and done, or will the Lions continue to advance?
