Thoughts for the Day, November 21, 2022: Are we getting immune?

On November 20, 2022, a mass shooting occurred at Club Q, a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States. Five people were killed, and 25 others were injured, 19 of them by gunfire. The suspect, 22-year-old Anderson Lee Aldrich, was also injured and taken to a local hospital. Aldrich was subdued by a patron who sat on Aldrich until the police arrived.

In Yazoo, Mississippi also on November 20, at 12:41 a.m., a person opened fire during a game of dice at a bonfire at Wells Place Farm killing 1 and injuring 6.

In Dallas, Texas also on November 20, four people were shot and injured after an argument in the parking lot of a billiard hall in the East Oak Cliff neighborhood.

On one day, there were six killed, and 35 injured in mass shootings. We are becoming so immune to mass shootings that only the mass shooting in Colorado Springs received national press.  Here is a list of all the mass shootings in the U.S this year.  In November alone, there have been 30 mass shootings, more than one per day.  A mass shooting is defined as four or more people being injured as a result of the shooting.

Now that the Republicans have confirmed control over the House, they have announced that there number one priority is to investigate President Biden, other Democrats and the politicizing of the Justice Department.

I am not a politician, but this seems like a very strange strategy, especially following there weak showing in the 2022 midterms.  It appears it is a strategy to appease the former president.  I don’t believe it is a strategy that is in the best interest of the country nor is it a strategy that will win back the voters.  Nolan Finley of the Detroit News had this to say:

House Republicans understandably want to get even with Democrats, who have spent the last two years investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riots.
But making their first priority of their new majority probing Democrats, particularly President Joe Biden, sends a message that they’re out to settle scores rather than fixing the many things that have gone wrong in the country under his leadership.
Put in place an agenda first, and pass legislation to bring down energy prices, end the illegal student loan forgiveness scam, help communities deal with crime and secure the southern border. Let Senate Democrats kill them if they dare.
I agree that Hunter Biden’s foreign dealings, and his father’s alleged role in them, need to be scrutinized, as does the partisan bias of the Justice Department.
But first build some governing credibility. Otherwise, the GOP will play right in to the Democratic strategy of casting them as obstructionist with no clear vision of their own.

A close friend asked me to look into the cost of various investigations. I chose three highly politicized investigations.  The cost of these investigations is not insignificant. Here are some examples.

Congressional investigation into the attack of the embassy in Benghazi, cost 6-8 million.

To date cost of the January 6 House Select Committee, $$6-8 million.

My favorite, AG Nessel’s prosecution of Nick Lyon, former governor Snyder and others in the Water Crisis.  Over $55 million to date and the case was dismissed for Lyon and other charged with felonies by the appeals court and the Michigan Supreme Court, but Nessel continues to pursue it, even though she is faced with an additional cost of $40 million to meet the Taint Team requirements.

Today I was encouraged when I learned a small group of Michigan Republican lawmakers sought subpoena powers to investigate the 2022 election, six weeks before Democrats take control of the state Legislature and the state House Speaker Jason Wentworth, R-Farwell, criticized the idea in an email, suggesting it was “a shameless and half-baked political stunt performed on state time.”

It is nice when a politician stands up and calls out other politicians for wasting taxpayer money on politically motivated investigations.

Please feel free to share my blog.

Elections Matter. Pray for peace and tolerance. What are you doing to stop the violence?

Quote of the Day:  “AG Nessel and her team have spent over $55 million prosecuting Director Lyon and others. I do not believe any state department should perceive they have an open check book to pursue cases that have been proven to be without merit. It is time for AG Nessel and her team to take the high road and to close the cases against Director Lyon and others.” Jim Haveman, former DHS Director under Engler and Snyder.

Orchid of the Day: The Detroit Lions, for winning their third game in a row in convincing fashion on Sunday against the NY Giants at the Giants home field.

Second Orchid of the Day: The Detroit Lions and the City of Detroit for welcoming the Buffalo Bills to play at Ford Field on Sunday after extreme snow caused the game in Buffalo against the Browns to be moved to Detroit with only fours days notification.  The game was a sellout.

Onion of the Day:  The idiot who opened fire in Colorado Springs at the Club-Q nightclub this weekend.

Question of the Day: When will this country say enough is enough when it comes to mass shootings?

Video/Image of the Day: Lions radio announcer, Dan Miller, during last weeks game with Chicago Bears. This is what i call enthusiasm.
