Thoughts for the Day, November 29, 2023: Happy birthday to my brother Larry and to my brother-in-law Zane.

Onion of the Day: The Detroit Three automakers for not having one car in the top 10 for reliability in the latest study from Consumer Reports.

Per the Detroit News today, the Detroit Three automakers once again had a subpar performance in the Annual Auto Reliability study from Consumer Reports. Bested by the Asian automakers, not one Detroit Three brand made the top 10 in the latest study, which was released Wednesday during an online press conference with the Automotive Press Association.  The top five brands in this year’s study are: Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus coming in at No. 1 followed by Toyota, BMW AG’s Mini, Honda Motor Co.’s Acura and Honda.

This cannot be good for the sales. With the money being paid to the CEO’s and top-level management, the board of each company should find this totally unacceptable.  New UAW union president Shawn Fain should find this totally unacceptable and be working with leadership to develop an immediate solution. If Fain wants to save jobs, I cannot think of a better place to start.

In my blog yesterday I quoted Bill Clinton, “It’s the economy, stupid” in describing what I believe will be the deciding factor in the 2024 presidential election.

Following the posting of the blog, I received comments from two people who had a different but similar take on what will be the most important issue in the 2024 presidential election. This quote from one of them says it all. “Its about democracy, stupid.”  If the former president is one of the candidates, I couldn’t agree more.

Saturday’s U of M vs. OSU football game in Ann Arbor was the most watched edition of “The Game” in 17 years.  According to a report from Sports Media WatchMichigan’s 30-24 win against Ohio State on FOX’s “Big Noon Saturday” broadcast averaged 19.07-million viewers: the largest audience for the matchup since the No. 1 Buckeyes beat the No. 2 Wolverines 42-39 in 2006, which had 21.04 million viewers.

Alabama vs Auburn was the second-most watched college football game behind OSU vs Michigan last Saturday, averaging 9.09 million viewers.  Less than half of the amount who watched UM/OSU.

Considering the promoting Fox did for THE GAME, it is not surprising that it is the most watched game of rivalry week.  The magnitude of the difference between the Auburn/Alabama game is surprising to me.

Make sure you check out my Video of the Day.  It is a tribute to the Michigan fans and their reaction to the devasting injury to Michigan’s captain Zak Zinter during the second half of the game.  The injury was so gruesome, that Fox decided not to show any replays of it.

Joel Klatt, the analyst on the broadcast, describes the moment in his podcast on Monday and it brings him to tears. U of M fans get my Orchid of the Day.

Thank you to my good friend Dan Jeffery, Sr. for sending it to me.

Quote of the Day: “It’s true that he has not been on the sidelines for six of those games, but we won all those games. It really is a credit to him. The coach has talked to me about that situation and has said he knows nothing about what happened, and I trust him. He is a man of honor. Everyone who knows him knows that. It’s an ongoing investigation, and we’ll see what happens. I just want to say very, very clearly, it’s no secret to people that I trust the guy, He is one of the greatest coaches out there in the NFL or NCAA. The football team loves him. The greatest sign of a great coach is the team wins whether or not he is on the sidelines. We’ll just wait and see how this whole thing goes.”

U of M President Santa Ono responding to a question about Jim Harbaugh during a question-and-answer session today at the Detroit Economic Club.

I hope Ono’s trust is not misplaced.

Question of the Day: Why is it so hard for the Detroit Three automakers to produce top quality cars when compared to the other car companies?
