Thoughts for the Day, November 3, 2020: Election Night

It is 11PM and as expected it is going to be days before we know the results of the presidential election. Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsyvania. Florida, Georgia and Ohio are still too close to call. So far no states have switched from where they ended up in 2016. Only Arizona seems like it is changing from red to blue, which could end up being a big deal.

I am sure that in 4 years, the timing of counting mail in votes will change. People are going to demand that ballots be counted sooner so results are known in a timely manner. Some states like Arizona allow mail in ballots to be counted when they arrive. This makes sense to me as long as the proper secrurity can be implemented so that the results are kept secret until the polls close.

As in prior years, I turn to ABC for my election coverage. I find them to be the most neutral and the most insightful. George Stephanopolis is like Walter Cronkite to me. I trust him to be fair and unbiased, even though he used to be part of the Bill Clinton press team.

The City Clerk of Detroit is excited that an estimated 55% of Detroit’s eligible voters will vote, which is the highest rate in over 30 years. It means that 45% of the people do not care enough to vote. I find this appalling. I do not understand how in this day and age people cannot take the time to vote.

Up until this election, I never realized how many people are one issue voters. The issue could be abortion, gun control, the economy, the deficit, gay rights, etc. The one issue voters support the candidate who agrees with them on one of these important issues, regardless of the overall quality of the candidate or how the candidate feels about other issues . I do not understand the mentality choosing a candidate based on one issue.

Violence at the polling place has not been an issue. Only a few minor incidents have occured. This is outstanding and appreciated news. I hope and pray that the lack of violence continues up until January 20, 2021.

Be patient and kind.
