Thoughts for the Day, November 5, 2020: The contrast is amazing

I just drove to Petoskey and it is nearly midnight. As I write this the presidential election is still up for grabs and too close to call, however, it is leaning Biden’s way.

What has been so clear in the last few days is the contrasting styles between President Trump and former Vice President Biden.

President Trump is saying he is the winner but the Democrats are stealing the election through voter fraud and illegal counting of votes. Biden is letting the process play out and saying if he wins he will be an American president not a Democrat president.

I watched President Trump’s press conference this evening before I took off for Petoskey. In all my years of watching presidential press conferences I don’t know when I have been so embarrassed from what I heard from a U.S. President. I was more embarrassed tonight than when I watched Nixon and Agnew embarrass themselves in 1973 and when Clinton lied and said “I didn’t have sex with that girl” during his second term.

I was embarrassed for the American people, I was embarrassed for all the hard working election workers who are doing above and beyond what has ever been required. I was embarrassed for the reputation of our country in the eyes of the rest of the world. I was embarrassed for our democracy. I was embarrassed for all the secretaries of state who know the worlds eyes are on them to get it right. Most of all I was just embarrassed and sad.

In the meantime, the U.S. reported 120,000 new cases. The election will be over in the next few days, unfortunately Covid-19 will continue to cause nearly 1,000 deaths per day. I am hoping that when the election is over, this country can unite and attack this virus in a unified fashion. It may be hopeful thinking, but hope is important in this day and age.
