Thoughts for the Day, October 28, 2020: Who is running the country?

Have you ever wondered why our politicians get paid by us tax payers during election season, especially those running for national office, when all it seems they are doing is campaigning for their next term in office? Is Trump and Pence doing there job as president and vice-resident when they spend so much time on the road campaigning? Is Harris doing her job as senator when she is spending so much time campaigning? Why are they getting their salary when they are spending all this time campaigning? It is just a question i have always thought about.

I worry about the impact Covid-19 is going to have on our mental health as we head into the short days and long nights of winter. One of the things that always kept me going was the excitement of Thankgiving, Christmas and New Years. The ability to celebrate with family and friends during this time is something I really look forward to with excitement With the significant increase is cases in the last few weeks, now is not the time to have large gatherings in enclosed places. Thus, our get togethers with family and friends are going to be very limited, if they occur at all. I know that I will struggle with this and I am sure most everyone else will too.

It is Michigan vs. Michigan State weekend. The battle for the Paul Bunyan trophy. The game normally occurs at this time of year, when the teams have 5 or 6 games by now. This year is so different as it will be just the second game of the season. As most coaches will tell you, the greatest improvement in a team occurs from week one to week two. With only one game under each teams belt, it is hard to predict how this game will turn out. It will be hard for Michigan to replicate the complete and dominating game they played at Minnesota, while at the same time MSU will be significantly better than they showed last week in their loss to Rutgers. Normally, when the other team commits 4 turnover you win the game, unless of course you commit 7 turnovers as MSU did. I look for U of M to prevail in the game, thus allowing me to gloat just a little bit. It will be short lived, because college basketball is not far off, and I think everyone in the B10 will be chasing the Spartins. Go Blue!

With the completion of the World Series A.J. Hinch’s and Alex Cora’s one year suspension is also over. They are now eligible to be hired by any team. I hope the Detroit Tigers give Hinch and Cora serious consideration for the Tiger’s manager job. The current situation of the Tiger’s is very similar to the situation Hinch encountered when he took over as manager of the Astros and then helped build them into World Series champions in four years. Cora was part of Hinch’s staff before he became the manager of the Red Sox.
