Thoughts for the Day, October 3, 2022: A good day to be a Michigan Medicine nurse.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Michigan Medicine nurses have approved a four-year, $273 million contract with University of Michigan Health after months of working without a new agreement in place.

Nurses represented by the University of Michigan Professional Nurse Council, a local bargaining unit of the Michigan Nurses Association, approved the new contract that includes:

Nurse practitioners will be in a new salary step model. All other nurses will receive a 7.5% pay raise in the first year. All bargaining unit members will receive a 6% pay increase in the second year, 5% increase in the third year and 4% in the fourth year, according to a release from the university.

The union’s bargaining team said in a Facebook post that an overwhelming majority of members voted to ratify the tentative agreement and the new contract will take effect immediately.

Its post called this an “enormous achievement” and “(f)or the first time ever, there will now be monetary penalties if the employer does not safely staff the hospital.”

My heart goes out to those in Florida and the Carolinas who felt the wrath of Ian during the last week.  The pictures and stories were heartbreaking.

My brother-in-law Ed Kleinow and his wife Mary, who live in Ft. Myers, had their boat and dock disappear. On the bright side, another boat ended up in their driveway.

Leah and I were scheduled for a week vacation in Charleston, SC starting this coming Saturday.  We decided to postpone the vacation due to Ian and the impact it had on Charleston and the Myrtle Beach area.

The more I read about the details behind Governor DeSantis’s political stunt of sending 50 immigrants from Venezuela who were in Texas to Martha’s Vineyard, the angrier I get.  My recent readings confirm that this was a clandestine operation using Florida taxpayer money in which the immigrants were enticed and mislead.  It is not surprising to find out DeSantis didn’t even warn Texas governor Abbott about his shenanigans.

I have a hard time understanding how this type of action will help DeSantis’ presidential aspirations.

It is getting comical with the Lions.  Even without their top three skilled players, the Lions offense scores 45 points against Seattle yesterday.  Unfortunately, they allowed Seattle to score 48 points.  Seven of the points Seattle scored were from a pick 6 at the start of the second half.  In essence the Lions offense was responsible for 52 points yesterday, 45 for the Lions and seven for Seattle. Up until yesterday, the Lions had never lost a home game when they scored 45 points.  After four games the Lions are 1-3, with three of the games at home.  They have scored more points than any other team. Unfortunately, they have given up more points than any other team.

Pleaase feel free to share my blog.

Elections Matter. Pray for peace and tolerance. What are you doing to stop the violence and mass killings?

Question of the DayAfter seeing the devastation of hurricane Ian, would it prevent you from buying a home in Florida or any of the coastal communities?
