Thoughts for the Day, October 4, 2021: Happy Broderick Crawford Day

It is October 4, otherwise known as Broderick Crawford day.  Crawford played Dan Mathews, the gruff and dedicated head of the Highway Patrol. A signature shot of the TV series which ran from 1955 to 1959 is fedora-wearing Mathews barking rapid-fire dialogue into a radio microphone using police codes as he leans against the door of his black and white patrol car. He always ended the conversation with the phrase “10-4” police code for “acknowledge.”

As you know, I do not watch the Detroit Lions. I figure I have enough stress in my life without adding the “heartburn” that comes with watching the Lions.  However, I usually check in to see how they are doing.  It was hard to fathom how they could top the previous week loss when they gave up a 4th and 19 followed by a record 66-yard field goal on the last play of the game.  But top it they did. In yesterday’s loss to the Bears the Lions entered the red-zone five times and came away with “3” points in a game they lost by 10.  I have four words of advice for new Lion’s head coach Dan Campbell, “always take the points”

The Michigan and Michigan State football teams look like they may be contenders rather than pretenders.  With both teams 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference, they are off to a good start.  Who knows what will happen next, but at least they are almost assured of a bowl game.

President Biden will be speaking in Howell this week hoping to gain momentum for his “agenda”.  I find this a very strange place for him to be looking for support.  Howell is known as one of the most conservative areas in the SE quadrant of Michigan.  I am not sure what his advisors were thinking when they scheduled this one.

Major League Baseball may want to rethink the playoff format after this year.  The Los Angeles Dodgers are the defending world series champions, and they have the second-best record in all of baseball with a 106-56 record.  Unfortunately, they finished second in their division to the San Francisco Giants and now they face a single game elimination against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night in the National League wild-card game.  As defending champs with the second best record in all of baseball it just doesn’t seem right that they can be eliminated in a one game playoff.

Stay safe.  Wash your hands regularly.  Schedule your vaccine and booster.  Wear your mask.  Social distance.

Orchid of the Day: Clint Eastwood won a $6 million lawsuit against a Lithuanian company that used his image to promote CBD products.

Onion of the Day: Congressional Democrats and President Biden for looking like they cannot get their act together as a political party after the haggling and infighting this week on the “infrastructure bill”.  It seems like senators Manchin and Sinema are holding the strongest cards.

Quote of the Day: “They didn’t necessarily get beat by Bears rookie Justin Fields.,,, They got beat by their own decisions, and indecisions.” Bob Wojnowski, Detroit News sports reporter following the Lions loss as a result of coming up empty 4 times in the red zone in yesterday’s loss to the Bears.
