Sometimes it is easier to quote others than it is to write using my own words. All of these are quotes I read today about our illustrious House of Representatives. They are my Quotes of the Day.
“A newly elected woman to congress was being interviewed by the press. When questioned, she remarked, ‘Please don’t tell anyone I was elected to congress, I told everyone I’m a prostitute.’ This pretty much sums up our current state of governance.” From a subscriber to my blog.
“A defining feature of the country’s most effective leaders has been their embrace of messy politics, including a willingness to listen to, and work with, people whose views they do not share. Transformational leaders tend to be both radical and practical.” David Leonhardt, NY Times columnist.
“If you’re going to defeat someone you think is doing something terrible, and also keep a democracy, you have to build a majority. And that might mean that you have to deal with people that you disagree with on some things, or many things, or even most things, but you find enough common cause that you can work with them on something. In a democracy, victory requires winning enough votes to take power, which in turn requires persuasion. That doesn’t mean winning over most of your opponents. It does often mean winning over some of them. And it’s difficult to persuade others if you stop listening to them.” Steve Inskeep, Author of “Differ We Must”
“Disgust isn’t a strong enough word. It’s worse than in elementary school. Like a playground, like dodge ball: ‘You’re out! You’re not the speaker anymore! Hit him in the head with a red ball!’” Bianca Vary, grandmother from Atlanta
“That a twice-impeached, quadrupled indicted former president is exercising this much influence is baffling to historians……” Jonathan Weisman, NY Times.
“They seem so disconnected from us. I don’t really look at either party as benefiting our country,” Kevin Bass, a bank executive from Texas
“It was just like, Oh God, what now?” Whitney Smith, a bookkeeper from Arizona.
“Just what we didn’t need — former President Donald Trump is weighing in on the struggle by Republicans to name a new House speaker after dissidents ousted Kevin McCarty. Trump wants Jim Jordan of Ohio. Which is good reason for the House to pick Steve Scalise of Louisiana.” Nolan Finley, Detroit News.
“Jim Jordan knew more about what Donald Trump had planned for January 6 than any other member of the House of Representatives. Jim Jordan was involved, was part of the conspiracy in which Donald Trump was engaged as he attempted to overturn the election…. There was a handful of people, of which he was the leader, who knew what Donald Trump had planned. Now somebody needs to ask Jim Jordan, ‘Why didn’t you report to the Capitol Police what you knew Donald Trump had planned? You were in those meetings at the White House. If the Republicans decide that Jim Jordan should be the Speaker of the House…there would no longer be any possible way to argue that a group of elected Republicans could be counted on to defend the Constitution.” Liz Cheney.
