Thoughts for the Day, September 12, 2022: We should never forget the day’s events and how we united in the days following

Just before the second plane hit the twin towers

Yesterday was the 21st anniversary of 9/11, a day anyone over 8 years old at the time, will remember for the remainder of their lives.  As I look back on those days immediately following, I remember a country united in its support for the victims and their families, the first responders, health care workers, the mayor of New York and, the president.  Patriotism was at an all time high.  We had common ground that brought us together and united us.  We talked. We cried. We shared our emotions.  We put our politics aside for the good of the country.  Things have changed a lot since those days. See my Video of the Day

Eastern Michigan University and MSU have been in the news for the wrong reasons in the last few days.  The assistant provost of EMU was arrested by Dearborn police on felony and misdemeanor charges for riding around in his car naked while doing other things. It was caught on a video which was provided to the police.

Who knows what is going on with MSU president, Samuel Stanley. Last night it was reported in the Detroit News that he was told to resign by Tuesday, or he was going to be fired, over the handling of the firing of the Dean of the MSU Business School.

Late today, MSU Vice Chair Dan Kelly, issued a statement claiming Stanley wasn’t asked to consider retiring. “This past Friday, Board Chair Dianne Byrum, Vice Chair Dan Kelly and President Stanley had a brief meeting. Contrary to recent media reports, at no time was the president threatened with termination or given an ultimatum regarding his employment. The Board has made no decision regarding any change in President Stanley’s employment status nor his employment contract.”

There will be more to come on this issue in the coming days.

Earlier today I was reading an article about the Fulton County (Georgia) Prosecutor, Fani T. Willis, and how she is addressing crime issues as well as investigating potential criminal charges against former president Trump for his alleged interference in the vote count in the 2020 presidential election.  At one point, I read a statement that through August, Atlanta had 100 murders for the year.  My first reaction was that isn’t very many, as compared to Chicago, Detroit, and other major cities.  Then it hit me.  I have become so desensitized with the number of murders and mass killings in this country, that I think that 100 is not that many.  There is a big message in there somewhere.

Every year at the start of the NFL season, I enter a pool in which I must pick one winner each week of an NFL game.  No odds, no point spreads, you cannot pick the same team twice.  If my team wins, I move on to the next week.  We do this every week until only one person is left in the pool.  A few years back I won the whole thing.

Unfortunately, I picked the Bengals at home over the Steelers.  The Bengals who were in the Super Bowl last year were 6-point favorites.  Unfortunately, the Bengals lost in overtime because they couldn’t kick a field goal when it counted.  For the second time in three years, I was eliminated in the first week.  Bummer.

Pleaase feel free to share my blog.

Elections Matter. Pray for peace and tolerance. What are you doing to stop the violence and mass killings?

Quote of the Day “I’m for truth no matter who tells it. I’m for justice, no matter who it is for or against.” Fani T. Willis, Fulton County prosecutor.

Orchid of the Day:  CarlosAlcaraz, the 19-year-old Spanish sensation, who beat Casper Ruud of Norway in four sets to win the U.S Open and captured his first Grand Slam championship and took the top spot in the ATP world rankings.

Onion of the Day:  Meshawn Maddock, the co-chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party, labeled Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. transportation secretary, and a former officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve, a “weak little girl” in a Sunday tweet.  Here is what she said. “We’re so blessed this weak little girl moved to Michigan. Looks like he’s bringing all his California Dreaming here with him.”

I am struggling to understand how the anyone, let alone the head of the Republican party, could make such a comment about a guy who served for seven years as an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve, taking a leave of absence from the South Bend mayor’s office for deployment to Afghanistan in 2014.

Question of the DayDo you remember where you were and what you were doing when you first heard about the attacks on 9/11?
