Thoughts for the Day, September 18, 2023: It feels like a gut punch.

We can never forget that our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day.  Every time I read something about a law enforcement officer dying in the line of duty, it feels like a gut punch. From the NY Times this morning

Investigators searched for clues on Sunday following the ambush-style killing of a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy, as outpourings of grief flowed over the officer’s dedication to public service.

The deputy, Ryan Clinkunbroomer, 30, was found unconscious, with a gunshot wound to the head, by a passer-by on Saturday evening, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. The deputy was in his patrol cruiser near the sheriff’s station in Palmdale, Calif., about a 60-mile drive north of the city of Los Angeles. Deputy Clinkunbroomer, who had been on duty and in uniform, was shot leaving the Palmdale station while at a red light, officials said. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.

Deputy Clinkunbroomer had just become engaged four days earlier. See my Image of the Day

I feel duped.  Whenever I have a cold, I always take DayQuil, which contains phenylephrine as a decongestant.  Last week, the F.D.A announced phenylephrine was ineffective when taken orally (it still works as a spray).  The F.D.A has known about this possibility for many years, but at its glacial speed it took until last week to make the announcement.  The good news is that the drug is safe.

I have much higher expectations for the Biden administration than the previous administration, so I was disappointed when I read the following article by Mitch Albom in yesterday’s Free Press.  I did not expect to ever read that the Biden administration would try to bully the press/social media as a way to control the administration’s message.  Here is the full article.  I hope you can access it.

M.L. Elrick is a Pulitzer Prize- and Emmy Award-winning investigative reporter who is responsible for breaking the Kwami Kilpatrick story which led to Kilpatrick’s ultimate conviction and 28-year sentence in federal prison.  When he writes a lengthy article, I know it is worth my time to read it.  In yesterday’s Free Press he wrote an article about his views on how Michigan State has handled the most recent issue with Coach Tucker.  It is worth the time to read. As an MSU graduate, it pains him to see his beloved university continue to shoot itself in the foot and not learn from its mistakes.

I am reading a new book by Amy Edmondson titled Right Kind of Wrong, which focuses on the importance of learning from mistakes.  Highly successful organizations, teams, and people, are willing to take risks, embrace failure, and use failure to improve and advance their organization, team, or themselves.

With that backdrop, there were two quotes that I read yesterday, that explain why the U of M football team has achieved a high level of success in the last two years, and why the Lions are no longer the Same Old Lions. In my opinion both quotes indicate that the culture that exists within these two teams is one that will get better because of their failures.  Here are the quotes which are my Quotes of the Day.

From Lions’ quarterback Jared Goff:  “We didn’t deserve that one. They earned that win and we kind of earned the loss. Again, had some plays potentially to kind of sneak one out there and get away with it, but typically it doesn’t go your way if the turnover margin is that big.”

From Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy after throwing three interception is Michigan’s 31-6 win:  “I’m gonna take all those on the chin. Put ’em all on me.  There’s a lot of stuff that just obviously didn’t go my way and didn’t go the offense’s way, but I just can’t wait to watch the tape and see the mistakes that were made and get better from it, honestly. But I’m gonna take all those on the chin. They were on me.”

When your quarterbacks are taking responsibility for their mistakes and admitting to them in the press, it is a sign of a winning culture.  No blame, no excuses. Learn, get better, move-on.

Prior to the start of the Detroit Tigers’ season, I placed a $50 bet on the Tigers winning 70 games this year. In early June, when the Tigers were hit with a rash of injuries to key players, (Greene, Skubal, Carpenter, and Rodriquez) and were in the middle of a 10-game losing streak, I wrote in my blog, that I could kiss that $50 goodbye.  Much to my surprise, the Tigers persevered and with their three-game sweep of the Angels this weekend they won their 70th game, with 13 games still left in the season.

Quote of the Day: See above.

Orchid of the Day: The Detroit Tigers for exceeding the oddsmakers’ expectations with 70 wins this season.

Onion of the Day: The Biden administration.  See above. I expect more of them.

Question of the Day: Same Old Lions or not?
