Thoughts for the Day, September 19, 2023: Moral Turpitude?

The term “moral turpitude” has always been a phrase that sounds heinous and weird to me. I knew the phrase was in most employment contracts, but I never really knew the definition.  All I ever knew is that I didn’t want to be accused of “moral turpitude” because it sounded so bad.  Since the term has been in the headlines recently due to the circus-carnival at MSU, I decided to ask CHAT-GPT for an opinion. Here is the answer.

“Moral turpitude” is a legal term used to describe conduct or actions that are considered morally or ethically reprehensible and can be used to assess a person’s character…….The exact definition and scope of what constitutes moral turpitude can vary from one jurisdiction to another and can change over time. Generally, it includes crimes or actions that involve dishonesty, fraud, theft, violence, or other actions that are considered morally wrong by society. Examples of crimes often associated with moral turpitude include murder, rape, robbery, fraud, and certain types of theft………It’s important to note that the specific definition and application of moral turpitude can vary significantly depending on the legal system and the context in which it is used, so it’s essential to consult with legal professionals or refer to specific legal statutes and regulations for precise information in a given jurisdiction.

Now you know.

In today’s Detroit News there was a guest editorial by former congressman Dave Trott. Here are excerpts.

Dave Trott, R- Birmingham, represented Michigan’s 11th Congressional District from 2015 to 2019. He is chairman of ATA National Title Group and a member of Keep Our Republic, a non-partisan civic-education non-profit.

Before my election to Congress, I owned and ran several businesses for three decades. As part of good governance, our executive team would meet regularly to discuss various risks and threats to our operations. We focused on cyber security, employee theft and retention, business continuity plans and regulatory issues.  We never, however, in 30 years discussed threats to our democracy.

But for the brave vote by a Republican member of the State Board of Canvassers, Michigan was on the brink of tipping our democracy into a constitutional chaos by delaying, if not outright obstructing, certification of the 2020 election……..

Based on what happened in 2020, and unprecedented dynamics in our country, business leaders need to add the erosion of democracy to the list of worries that keeps them up at night…..

Some will argue that this could never happen because the vast majority of Americans respect and believe in the validity of our elections and our democratic system of governance.

Consider the fact that my doomsday scenario almost happened in 2020. State and local officials in Michigan had to overcome pressure and outright false investigations to certify the results of the election. Even then, but for former Vice President Mike Pence doing his job, we would have had a constitutional crisis on January 6, 2021.

Quote of the Day; “Our business leaders need to understand the threats to our democracy and take steps to mitigate the risk. It is the right thing for them to do for their companies and our country. Corporate America has an important role to play in helping employees identify and understand that what unites us as Americans is stronger than what divides us.” Dave Trott.

Even when the Tigers are playing against J.D. Martinez, I am going to root for him.  In 2013, he was a member of the Houston Astros, but he was struggling as a hitter.  He spent the year trying to retool his swing, but it wasn’t getting the results he wanted but he continued the work.  In the spring of 2014, the Astros released Martinez and the Tigers picked him up and sent him to the Toledo Mud Hens. After spending April and early May ripping the cover off the ball, the Tigers brought him up and he hasn’t stopped hitting since.

After three years with the Tigers, he was traded to the Diamondback because the Tigers could not afford the contract he was going to offered as he entered free agency.  He signed a lucrative deal with the Red Sox and is now part of the Dodgers who the Tigers played last night.

He was the first baseball player I recall who would return to the dugout following his at bat and pull out his notebook and record each pitch and how he reacted.  He kept a book on every at bat that he would use to prepare for the next time he faced the pitcher.  He was way ahead of his time. Now, everyone does what he did, but they all use an Ipad or something similar.

When I woke up this morning and read the summary of last night’s game with the Dodgers, all I could do was smile. Here are excerpts from the Detroit News summary of the game.

J.D. Martinez was the first player to greet Miguel Cabrera before the game as the Dodgers honored the Tigers’ future Hall-of-Famer in his last visit to Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers presented Cabrera with a check for $5,000 for his foundation, a case of expensive alcohol and his very own Hollywood star. And then Martinez completely ruined the Tigers’ night. The former Tiger (2014-2017) hit a pair of home runs, singled and knocked in five as the Dodgers snapped the Tigers’ four-game win streak with an 8-3-win Monday night.

Question of the Day: How many people, in addition to Mel Tucker, will lose their job at MSU because of the circus carnival playing out at MSU?
